Metagenomics deciphers diagenetic processes of ferruginous mineralization in the deep biosphere
Abstract Ferruginous conditions in the Precambrian oceans gave rise to ancient iron formations that contain the oldest recognized traces of life in the form of mineral biosignatures and isotope imprints. However, these biogeochemical archives lack clear constraints on microbial diagenesis prior to lithification as metabolic functions of the primeval subsurface biosphere remain elusive.
Clay‐associated microbial communities and their relevance for a nuclear waste repository in the Opalinus Clay rock formation
Microbial community analysis 2.3.1 DNA extraction DNA was extracted from three biological replicates of each OPA facies and one sample from the PW. Replicates were obtained from different depth locations of the drill cores: samples representing the sandy facies were obtained from core BMA-3 3.85, 5.70, and 7.25 m from the gallery wall and are referred to as OPA sandy-1 to OPA sandy-3. The sample from the PW formation (PW) was obtained from the same core at 10.75 m from the gallery wall.
