Abstract Understanding plant survival mechanisms in degraded, drought-affected, and nutrient-limited soils can help mitigate the effects of climate change on crop production. Roots extend deep into soil through straight, tubular root hairs that facilitate resource uptake. In this study, we found a unicellular structure, termed the “hooked hair,” characterized by a pointed hook morphology that supports seedling establishment before root hair emergence.
Abstract Accurate 3D reconstruction is essential for high-throughput plant phenotyping, particularly for studying complex structures such as root systems. While photogrammetry and Structure from Motion (SfM) techniques have become widely used for 3D root imaging, the camera settings used are often underreported in studies, and the impact of camera calibration on model accuracy remains largely underexplored in plant science.
Abstract Real-time measurements of crop root architecture can overcome limitations faced by plant breeders when developing climate-resilient plants. Due to current measurement methods failing to continuously monitor root growth in a non-destructive and scalable fashion, we propose a first in-soil sensing system based on fiber Bragg gratings. The sensing system continuously logs three-dimensional strain generated by a growing pseudo-root.
