It was in middle school in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., that Trey Mazza “fell in love with stagecraft,” he recalls. He refined those skills at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, or UNCSA, in Winston-Salem, where he graduated this spring with a B.F.A. in design and production and a focus on stage management. Just weeks later, he was on the job at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, in Becket, Mass., where he is production manager for the outdoor Henry J. Leir Stage.

In 2025, companies cut 1.1 million jobs, the worst job slashing since Covid hit in 2020. Average graduate placement percentages for full-time employment in recent years have hovered in the high 50s, according to NACE, the National Association of Colleges and Employers. And the ed-tech company Cengage reported that only 41 percent of 2024 graduates and only 30 percent of 2025 graduates found full-time jobs related to what they studied.
