Stress-induced sympathetic hyperactivation drives hair follicle necrosis to trigger autoimmunity
Results To determine how psychological or physical stress affects the anagen hair follicle, we employed two established acute stress protocols (Figure 1A)—restraint stress, in which mice were put into restrainers,36,37 or transient pain induction,38 in which mice were injected with resiniferatoxin (RTX), an analog of capsaicin.1,39,40 We applied these protocols to 4-week-old C57BL/6 mice when most hair follicles in the backskin were in anagen IV (see STAR Methods).20,24 Both protocols led to...
Farmers deserve ownership of their data: Blockchain legislation can help
Virginia’s farmers are facing an innovation gap. For every dollar Americans spend in the food system, farmers receive just nine cents. That’s not because they lack hard work or skill, but because they often don’t have full control over the inputs, the machinery and even the data. Instead, this information is concentrated in separate businesses and corporations, who can use it to squeeze farmers, reduce competition and make our food system less resilient.
Rationalist Shabbat — LessWrong
We are having another rationalist Shabbat event at Rainbow Star House this Friday. The plan going forward will be to do one most Fridays. Email or DM me for the address if you haven’t been before. We are covered for a main dish this week (Chipotle catering), but if you are interested in bringing a snack/side/beverage, let me know. We appreciate all the help we've gotten so far and hope you'll continue to pitch in so these events can be sustainable for us. What is this event?
Rationalist Shabbat — LessWrong
We are having another rationalist Shabbat event at Rainbow Star House this Friday. The plan going forward will be to do one most Fridays. Email or DM me for the address if you haven’t been before. We are looking for 1-2 people to help with food this week-- if you can bring snacks/dips or a big pot of food/casserole (or order food), please let me know. These events will only be sustainable for us if we can keep getting help from the community, please pitch in if you can! What is this event?
Macrophages control pathological interferon responses during viral respiratory infection
Abstract Antiviral immune mediators, including interferons and their downstream effectors, are critical for host defense yet can become detrimental when uncontrolled. Here, we identify a macrophage-mediated anti-inflammatory mechanism that limits type I interferon (IFN-I) responses. Specifically, we found that cellular stress and pathogen recognition induce Oncostatin M (OSM) production by macrophages.
Optimizing the operational behavior of double helical gears
Optimized double helical gearing designs can help to save weight, assembly space and costs of turbo gear units, increase efficiency, and ensure low-noise operation. Double helical gears are becoming increasingly relevant, especially in the fields of turbomachinery, aerospace, and electro mobility. The reasons for this are the elimination of axial forces, which means bearings can be dimensioned smaller. Small gap widths between the gear halves are desirable in order to optimize the power density.

Dicer Cleavage by Calpain Determines Platelet microRNA Levels and Function in Diabetes
Methods and Results: Dicer levels were altered in platelets from diabetic mice and patients, a change that could be attributed to the cleavage of the enzyme by calpain, resulting in loss of function. Diabetes mellitus in human subjects as well as in mice resulted in decreased levels of platelet miR-142, miR-143, miR-155, and miR-223.
