Alexandra Howard

Howard Gardiner Cushing (1869–1916)—my grandfather—was a prolific American artist who bridged nineteenth-century realism and early modernism. He was celebrated in his time for shimmering portraits, impressionistic interiors, and large-scale murals filled with dreamlike images of Asia. A Boston Brahmin descended from Puritans and China traders, Cushing was surrounded by artistic figures from a young age.
