CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (CBS19 NEWS) -- With these cold conditions, there's ice forming on lakes and rivers, but it may or may not be safe to cross. According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, any ice less than four inches thick is not safe for walking. One would need five to seven inches to safely operate a snowmobile, while at least nine inches to drive a car over it.
