Malnutrition and associated risk factors in orphanages in Punjab, Pakistan: an analytical study

Discussion Orphans accounted for 65.2% of malnourished children in our study, compared with non-orphans (34.8%). Malnutrition in orphans in our study was higher compared with Pakistani studies conducted by Hassan et al 38 and Bashir and Shahid,9 who reported 58.6% and 12% malnutrition in orphans, respectively. The low percentage of malnutrition identified in these studies can be attributed to the use of only BMI criteria for identifying malnutrition in orphanages.
