The Next Iran War Is This Iran War
Iran Middle East and North Africa To understand how the current war in Iran will develop, one must first understand that it did not begin seven months ago. It didn’t even begin months earlier, when Israel targeted Iranian commanders and nuclear scientists in June 2025. These are all milestones that mark the renewal of a war that has continued for decades, ever since Washington and Tehran parted ways and Iran became an Islamic republic.
Iran’s Proxy Strategy Is Never Coming Back
A Shiite Muslim pilgrim holds up a picture of Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei (R), Iran's late founder of the Islamic Republic Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini (C), and the head of Lebanon's militant Shiite Muslim movement Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, during a break in Najaf on their way to the shrine central city of Karbala on December 9, 2014.
Iran’s Proxy Strategy Is Never Coming Back
Iran Middle East and North Africa Three years ago, on a clear day, you could stand at the Lebanese border with Israel in the village of Marwahin and see the Baha’i Gardens on Mount Carmel, looking down over the Israeli city of Haifa. The view suited the widespread talk at the time about an Iran-led “axis of resistance” based in Lebanon and Gaza and intent on liberating Palestine. Then Oct. 7 happened.

I created a couple of websites through Angelfire and 8m, but there was no real ecosystem to nurture the idea.

Lebanon Is No Longer About Lebanon
Iran Middle East and North Africa BEIRUT—The building in Beirut’s southern suburb had already learned the language of war. When I went to see it on Sunday, after the latest Israeli strike, it was not the image of sudden destruction that stayed with me, but the sense of repetition. Two floors had been hit. Two people were killed. The concrete carried older wounds from previous attacks in recent weeks, as if the target had not been newly identified but revisited.
The World Keeps Asking Iran the Wrong Question

Behrouz Mehri/AFP via Getty Images The question that has organized most serious analysis of Iran for the past half-century is: What does the Islamic Republic want? It is a reasonable question, but not the right one. The Islamic Republic is 47 years old. Iran, as a modern coherent political entity, is five centuries old.
The battle of perception: From Israel’s Fauda to Hezbollah’s FPV footage
The footage lasts just three minutes. An Israeli flag flies over a position in the village of al-Bayada, in occupied southern Lebanon. One drone approaches the flagpole while another observes from above. The flag falls after the impact. The final frame displays a digitally rendered, torn Israeli flag with the words: “Al-Bayada does not welcome you.” The video’s caption reads: “Flag lowering ceremony”.

Iran Is More Unified Than Ever
Iran Middle East and North Africa TEHRAN—Many policymakers in Washington seem to believe Iran has lacked clear leadership during the war. Leading the way has been U.S. President Donald Trump, who argues that there is no one in Iran for the United States to negotiate a peace deal with. After the attack that killed Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, he even suggested that he should help choose Iran’s next leader.
The Iran Cease-Fire Has Only Divided the War
U.S. Foreign Policy Iran Middle East and North Africa TEHRAN—In Iran's capital, the initial news about a cease-fire started as a rumor, grew into anticipation, and soon felt almost like a celebration. People quickly gathered in Enghelab Square. Families stood together, waving Iranian flags. Young men held a large banner across the square, its colors moving above them while cars circled, horns blaring and patriotic songs playing from speakers.

The Iranian President, Masoud Pezeshkian, has clearly said in an open letter to the American people that Iran has never started a war, and that Iran has no hostility towards American citizens.

Waiting for the War to End in Tehran
TEHRAN—Just after 1 a.m. in Tehran, my friend and I were still sitting in a crowded café. Hookahs passed from hand to hand. People scrolled through their phones, speaking in low voices that occasionally broke into laughter. Then came the blast, deep and heavy, the kind you feel through the floor before it reaches your ears. Conversations stopped. Heads turned toward the windows. For a few seconds, the room went silent. Then life resumed.
Iran Is Becoming America’s Ukraine
TEHRAN—Inside a building in the Iranian capital, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi did not seem to be seeking an exit from conflict. Rather, he appeared to be preparing the nation for its continuation. Above ground, in broad daylight, the city had adjusted to the rhythm of interception fire and public display. Men and women gathered in the streets, some dressed in burial shrouds, carrying flags and portraits of assassinated Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
Analysis: The war on Iran is at a crossroads Original
The Middle East may be at a turning point. For the first time in decades, Gulf cities such as Dubai and Doha face risks to their economic stability, which depends on access to global markets and steady trade. Airspace restrictions and regional conflict have forced airlines to reroute or ground flights. Foreign investors are now questioning the region’s investment safety. The war is challenging the Gulf states’ economic model, developed over the past 20 years.

Iran Signals Defiance by Naming Khamenei’s Son as New Supreme Leader
For years, opposition media and analysts have speculated that Mojtaba Khamenei, the rarely seen son of recently assassinated Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, could inherit the Islamic Republic’s highest office. Within Iran, however, this idea has been far more sensitive. The Islamic Republic was created to oppose hereditary rule. The 1979 revolution that overthrew Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi was more than a political change; it represented a break with the monarchy.
Iran Is Built to Withstand the Assassination of Ayatollah Khamanei
The latest Israeli and U.S. war on Iran began with airstrikes on the home and offices of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. The premise seemed to be that Khamenei’s sudden elimination would pose a dire threat to the current ruling system. The goal would be to achieve what happened in Libya after Muammar al-Qaddafi or in Syria after Bashar al-Assad, where regimes collapsed as soon as their leaders were no longer in power. In those systems, the state’s future was tied to a single person.

Iran Dangerously Misunderstands Its Negotiations With Trump and the Possibility of War
It was just past sunset on Feb. 21, 2022, when Russian President Vladimir Putin began his infamous speech effectively declaring war on Ukraine. I was in a hotel in Vienna that evening, and all indications suggested that Iran, the United States, and the remaining parties to nuclear negotiations were hours away from announcing an agreement. European Union coordinators told me as much, as did members of the Iranian negotiating delegation. Then, the war in Ukraine began. The agreement never materialized.
Can US-Iran diplomacy work? Inside the narrow window for talks
Iran wants talks with the US to stabilise before inviting regional nations to join, as Trump sends mixed messages. By Ali Hashem Tehran, Iran – In Tehran, the question is no longer whether diplomacy is under way, but whether it can move fast enough to stay ahead of escalation. An Iranian official told Al Jazeera that Oman has been confirmed as the venue for the next round of Iran-United States talks, scheduled later this week.
