Small Axes, by Kris Tidjan

This soul-jazz and Afro-beat infused LP takes listeners on a journey through Tidjan's Martinique heritage and contemporary broken beat and jazz influences from Philly to Detroit. The artist's unique and unorthodox approach to writing will transport you to a world of peacefulness and aerial feeling, leaving you relishing a re-listen to the album.
Music Review Committee: Volunteer Adds! - KCSB FM - KCSB FM, Santa Barbara
‹ Back Music Review Committee is a weekly meeting hosted by our very own Music Department, in which volunteers sort through and listen to (sometimes unreleased) music that has been sent to the station and curate which CDs get added to our library. It’s a space for friends, group listening sessions, music discussion and discovery, exotic teas, and cat puzzles.

Event Review: Love Supreme Jazz Festival (Glynde Place, Lewes; Friday 1st July to Sunday 3rd July 2022) | Rhythm Passport
After a two year hiatus, Love Supreme is back, vibrant as ever. Since its inception in 2013 some have questioned whether a large scale jazz festival would survive, going so far as to label it a risky endeavour. The festival responded, casting its net far and wide to celebrate the world’s best funk, soul, hip-hop and blues alongside jazz. The naysayers also got to eat their words with 25,000 sell-out crowds a day.

Vijay Iyer, Floating Points/Pharoah Sanderss, & More
Why don’t people listen to Louis Armstrong anymore? Maybe they do. I’ll rephrase. Why don’t people talk about Louis Armstrong anymore? It’s impossible to imagine jazz without Louis Armstrong. Though he didn’t come out of nowhere — he apprenticed with King Oliver and Fletcher Henderson before setting out on his own — he stunned listeners virtually from the start. He wasn’t just a stylist with a strong individual sound; he was an absolute master of the horn.

João Donato JID007, by João Donato, Adrian Younge, Ali Shaheed Muhammad
Where’s João Donato? It’s a frequently asked question, referring simultaneously to the physical location and the musical moment he inhabits. A sampling of some of his more descriptive song titles suggests Donato’s comfort with musical hybrids: “Bluchanga,” “Sambolero,” and “Sambongo,” to name just a few. Lacking a name for his style of music, Donato’s is a distinct sound, immediately recognizable from the first few bars of any of his compositions.

The American Negro, by Adrian Younge
Record/Vinyl + Digital Album The American Negro is an unapologetic critique, detailing the systemic and malevolent psychology that afflicts people of color. This project dissects the chemistry behind blind racism, using music as the medium to restore dignity and self-worth to my people. It should be evident that any examination of black music is an examination of the relationship between black and white America.
