1 Introduction Major depressive disorder (MDD) is among the most prevalent and debilitating psychiatric disorders globally. According to the World Health Organization, MDD is projected to become the second leading cause of global disease burden after ischemic heart disease by the year 2030 [1, 2]. Women are more frequently diagnosed with MDD than men [3]. Despite extensive research, the exact pathophysiology of MDD remains elusive.
