Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
The one I gave myself, writing and publishing on my travel blog about the different countries I was visiting and providing travel tips!
Have you ever used a typewriter?
I haven't! I'd love to try one though, it seems like such an amazing way to get your ideas onto paper.
How is social media changing news?
Social media is an echo chamber. It can create a narrow tunnel where everyone seems to agree with you and news is one-dimensional.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
I have a sweet spot for Carrie Bradshaw from Sex & The City. She was the first fictional journalist I remember seeing on TV.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
You act as a proactive citizen by using your agency to better the digital environment. Overall, you're driven by reflection and reason.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
#craefulgang, circulated by John Oliver to spread awareness about the major risks cryptocurrencies can carry for potential investors.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Email. Quick, short, and concise is best. Include the title, "(PR) or (WRITER) Pitch" in the subject line, and a few sentences of the idea.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Grammarly, Google Drive (Google everything, really), Telegram, Whatsapp, Snopes, and so much more.
What's your favorite social network?
Basic, but Twitter. I find so many interesting ideas and clips in there, it's a never-ending source of inspiration and laughs.
Who do you wish followed you?
Taylor Lorenz, the star at the NYT who reports on digital culture, influencers, and wacky internet trends. She seems very down to Earth!
Why did you become a journalist?
I had a deep desire to create my own work and wanted to write articles that would function as an escape and educational tool for others.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
I did not! My experience with writing first started with my blog that I launched in 2019 after I bought a one-way ticket to Asia.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
While it didn't get much publicity, my story regarding the dangerous side of Family Youtube Channels. It felt very purposeful.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
You don't need to be hired by a big digital media company to get started. You have a laptop, an internet connection. It's all you need!
When's the best time to pitch you?
Anytime!
What's the best pitch you ever got?
"'Money-Making Guru' Scammers Are Coming For The Younger Generation". It makes you go, "Huh. I haven't heard of that one before."
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
"5 WAYS TO EARN MONEY WITHOUT HAVING TO WORK!!" Pretty self-explanatory.
What's your favorite drink?
Aperol Spritz in the summer, Old Fashion with rye in the winter (easy on the sugar)!
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Reading outside, walking my dog Oreo, or learning (and failing) at baking.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
I find Bitch Media to be an incredible publication. They're able to tap into the subconscious of our current cultural conversation with ease.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
That internet reporting isn't important or valuable. The internet is doing something profound to us: it's vital we keep tabs on it.
