Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Journalists research, write, edit, proofread and file news stories, features and articles.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

yes

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Use Email For the First Point of Contact

Why did you become a journalist?

I became a journalist because I loved to write, and getting a journalism degree and working at a newspaper and then magazines seemed the best way to become a writer. I love elements of journalism such as gathering information and interviewing people, which I’m very good at. But while I have won many journalism awards and written hundreds of journalism articles, I consider myself a writer rather than a journalist. By that I mean I write and have written many different types of things — humor columns, essays, material for companies, scripts, and novels. When I am writing those things, I am not a journalist. I still do many journalistic pieces, but primarily I think of myself as a storyteller. Sometimes journalism is the best way to tell a story, and somethings other types of writing can communicate a story better. Since I have been a freelance writer for many years, I can be many different types of writers during the same day — a journalist, a copywriter, a novelist, an essayist. They are all worthwhile and they are all different. The only thing, as a writer who wears many hats, is to understand the objective of any type of writing, and always act with honesty and integrity.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Master the fundamentals. Good grammar, punctuation, and style aren't good enough.

When's the best time to pitch you?

25% of journalists prefer to be pitched between 6 a.m. to 9 a.m.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

This means media pitches require personalized outreach and research beforehand in order to understand what a journalist or influencer cares about, writes on and how you can help contribute to their beat. Remember: great media pitches play on the idea of reciprocity.

What's your favorite drink?

coke
