Just give me my money: Financial year end brings debt recovery into sharp focus
Money is a sensitive subject in Scotland. It becomes even more difficult to navigate when you are the one that is owed. While we hope that in these situations the debtor makes repayments towards the sum owed to you or your organisation, we appreciate that this does not always happen. With the end of the financial year in sight for many businesses and organisations, as well as private individuals, the need to balance the books is vital, and debt recovery is one way to achieve that position.
Bridging the energy divide: How EPC rules differ between Scotland and England
Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) have become a cornerstone in the management and regulation of real estate. Designed to assess the energy efficiency of buildings, EPCs play a critical role in sustainability efforts and can influence lending decisions. As environmental, social, and governance (ESG) considerations increasingly shape the property landscape, EPC ratings are often pivotal in determining access to finance.
Ports and harbours infrastructure investment
Offshore wind undoubtedly presents Scotland with more than a once-in-a-generation opportunity. The country has a project pipeline which will deliver more than 45 gigawatts, placing Scotland in the top 10 globally in the offshore wind market. What is clear is that unprecedented investment in Scotland’s network of ports and harbours – comprising 11 major ports and more than 200 smaller ports and harbours – is critical to unlocking that opportunity.
Extension to Administration: Don’t Take it for Granted
A recent Scottish case considered the requirements of administrators when applying to the Court for an extension to the term of an administration. It has become increasingly apparent that the Scottish Courts are applying significant scrutiny to administration extension applications. The opinion of Lord Braid in this case provides helpful guidance for administrators and their advisors of the Court’s expectations and requirements of administrators in such applications.

Global Estimates of Mesoscale Vertical Velocity Near 1,000 m From Argo Observations
1 Introduction An essential component of many physical, chemical, and biological processes, vertical motion in the ocean occurs at all spatial and temporal scales, with a high degree of variability in both. As the pathway from the ocean interior to the surface, vertical flow directly impacts thermocline structure, nutrient transport, and global circulation (Liang et al., 2017; Martin & Richards, 2001; Munk, 1966; Pilo et al., 2018; Stommel & Arons, 1959; Sverdrup, 1947).
Tracer Stirring and Variability in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current Near the Southwest Indian Ridge
1 Introduction Oceanic macroscale turbulence, encompassing flows at scales of 1–100 km, is efficient at stirring tracers and plays an important role in setting the transport and storage properties of climatically and biogeochemically relevant tracers.
Carbon Outgassing in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current Is Supported by Ekman Transport From the Sea Ice Zone in an Observation‐Based Seasonal Mixed‐Layer Budget
1 Introduction The Southern Ocean plays a significant role in the global carbon cycle. Around 40% of oceanic uptake of anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) occurs in the waters south of 35°S (DeVries, 2014). Ekman divergence driven by strong westerly winds leads to a combination of upwelling and downwelling of natural and anthropogenic carbon, respectively.

Comparing Single and Multiple Imputation Approaches for Missing Values in Univariate and Multivariate Water Level Data
1. Introduction Water level is a measure of water depth in rivers/basin/lakes within a given place over time. Studying water level is important as it can provide warnings for flood risk, which helps to limit the impact of flood disasters on the local population and is also crucial for effective water resources management and for policy makers [1].

Animal-free alternatives and the antibody iceberg
To the Editor — Antibody generation using animal immunization presents scientific and ethical concerns. From a scientific standpoint, animal-generated antibodies can suffer from batch-to-batch variation, low specificity, high background and undefined identity of the binding reagent — all of which can compromise research reproducibility. From an ethical standpoint, the European Union (EU) core values are to replace, reduce or refine animal use in research and improve the quality of research.
Animal-derived-antibody generation faces strict reform in accordance with European Union policy on animal use
Criticism has plagued data derived from immuno-analysis because of the frequently reported unreliable nature of animal-derived antibodies1,2. Polyclonals suffer from cross-reactivity, high background and batch-to-batch variability. The lack of specificity reported in monoclonals is partly attributed to genetic heterogeneity introduced during hybridoma generation and lack of sequence identification.
Reproducibility: bypass animals for antibody production
CORRESPONDENCE 15 May 2020 The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre has just released its recommendations on non-animal-derived antibodies (see go.nature.com/2ypgstg), in accordance with the EU’s 2010 directive on protecting laboratory animals (go.nature.com/2wxd9as). We urge government authorities, funding agencies and publishers to endorse this technical advance to improve scientific reproducibility and benefit society. Animal-derived antibodies are plagued by efficacy issues (A.

Autonomous biogeochemical floats detect significant carbon dioxide outgassing in the high‐latitude Southern Ocean
The Southern Ocean absorbs a great deal of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and helps to shape the climate of Earth. However, we do not have many observations from this part of the world, especially in winter, because it is remote and inhospitable. Here we present new observations from robotic drifting buoys that take measurements of temperature, salinity, and other water properties year‐round. We use these data to estimate the amount of carbon dioxide being absorbed by the Southern Ocean.
Alberta: New Occupational Health and Safety Act Expands the Scope of Duties
On June 1, 2018, amendments to Alberta's Occupational Health and Safety Act (the "New Act") came into force, significantly expanding the nature of the health and safety obligations owed by employers and businesses in Alberta. This article focuses on one of the areas in which changes have been made: the expansion of the types of entities that have duties under the act and the scope of those duties.
Lagrangian Timescales of Southern Ocean Upwelling in a Hierarchy of Model Resolutions
In this paper we use a variety of ocean models to investigate how long it takes for deep ocean waters to upwell to the surface of the Southern Ocean around Antarctica. We track virtual particles in our simulated currents and show how they spiral southward and upward toward the surface. We find that this journey takes 87 years in a standard coarse-resolution climate model but only 17 years in a state of the art high-resolution climate model.
Oxygen in the Southern Ocean From Argo Floats: Determination of Processes Driving Air-Sea Fluxes
The Southern Ocean is of outsized significance to the global oxygen and carbon cycles with relatively poor measurement coverage due to harsh winters and seasonal ice cover. In this study, we use recent advances in the parameterization of air-sea oxygen fluxes to analyze nine years of oxygen data from a recalibrated Argo oxygen dataset and from air-calibrated oxygen floats deployed as part of the Southern Ocean Carbon and Climate Observations and Modeling (SOCCOM) project.
