I trained as an engineer but moved into production in the 1980s, starting by presenting a news magazine programme on commercial radio in Britain, joining the BBC, then emigrating to New Zealand where I was chief sub for Newstalk ZB for 12 happy years; I left to set up a TV news bulletin for Shine TV.
