3 weeks of tougher lockdowns in Sydney's hotspots halved expected case numbers
In a pandemic, you expect that as new public health measures are introduced, there’s an observable impact on the spread of the disease. But while that might have been the case in Melbourne’s second wave last year, the highly contagious Delta variant is different. In Sydney’s current second wave, none of the increased restrictions seemed to directly decrease the spread of COVID-19. Until now.
Sydney avoids 4000 cases, but lockdown must be broadened - InSight+
DESPITE increasingly tough restrictions in parts of Greater Sydney, the number of COVID-19 cases has trended steadily upwards over recent weeks. Of particular concern is that the number of new cases who were infectious in the community remains high; primarily for this reason Premier Gladys Berejiklian warned (rightly) over 2 weeks ago that “things are going to get worse before they get better”. At the time of writing, it has been over 6 weeks since Sydney’s outbreak began.

A tougher 4-week lockdown could save Sydney months of stay-at-home orders, our modelling shows Original
Residents in Sydney, the NSW Central Coast, Blue Mountains and Wollongong today received confirmation their lockdown would be extended to at least 30 July. But our modelling suggests it may take until the end of the year to get case numbers close to zero, unless more stringent measures are introduced. NSW health authorities increased restrictions on Friday.
The impact of three progressively introduced interventions on second wave daily COVID-19 case numbers in Melbourne, Australia
Abstract Background The city of Melbourne, Australia experienced two waves of the COVID-19 epidemic peaking, the first in March and a more substantial wave in July 2020. During the second wave, a series of control measure were progressively introduced that initially slowed the growth of the epidemic then resulted in decreasing cases until there was no detectable local transmission.
Reanalysis of the Pfizer mRNA BNT162b2 SARS-CoV-2 vaccine data fails to find any increased efficacy following the boost: Implications for vaccination policy and our understanding of the mode of action
Abstract Background In clinical trials two vaccinations with mRNA vaccines have shown high efficacy in preventing COVID-19. However, in the context of a pandemic, the time to generation of protective immunity, the need for and timing of a second vaccination are matters of legitimate debate. This manuscript explores the efficacy and timing of the second dose COVID-19 vaccines, including a reanalysis of data from the Pfizer mRNA BNT162b2 mRNA SARS-CoV-2 vaccine phase 3 study.
Impact of Victoria’s Stage 3 lockdown on COVID‐19 case numbers
Stage 3 lockdown measures in Victoria reduced COVID‐19 transmission, but more was required to control the epidemic Australia, like many other countries, had an initial rise in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) cases in March and April 2020; however, this was followed by a relatively sharp decline in May 2020 after federal and state governments introduced strict community controls.

Development of a high-throughput method to evaluate serum bactericidal activity using bacterial ATP measurement as survival readout
Serum Bactericidal Activity (SBA) assay is the method of choice to evaluate the complement-mediated functional activity of both infection- and vaccine-induced antibodies. To perform a typical SBA assay, serial dilutions of sera are incubated with target bacterial strains and complement. The conventional SBA assay is based on plating on agar the SBA reaction mix and counting the surviving bacterial colony forming units (CFU) at each serum dilution.
