Search ArticlesWith delight and schadenfreude, Ash Flanders’ Commentary skewers the male artistic genius
Bold doesn’t even begin to describe Commentary, the new play written by Ash Flanders: an acerbic flaying of public and private personas. Middle-aged film academic and former film maker Nick Atkinson (Gyton Grantley) is preparing the director’s commentary for a retrospective screening of his one film, Low, in the city’s film festival.
Inflation eases less than expected, making another interest rate hike more likely
Easing inflation may give mortgage holders a reprieve on further repayment increases for now – but maybe not for long. The consumer price index (CPI) rose 3.5% in the year to July, down from 3.8% in the year to June. But that was a smaller fall than had been predicted. The Reserve Bank of Australia’s preferred measure of underlying inflation, the trimmed mean, was unchanged at 3.6%.
The Airport Chaplain: SBS’s global Netflix debut is heartfelt TV that will blow you away
When the trailer for SBS’s new drama The Airport Chaplain was released, it looked too good to be true: national treasure Hugo Weaving, rising star Shabana Azeez, and an endearing conceptual combination of The Terminal meets Border Security. Fortunately, the series is even better than I’d hoped. The role of airport chaplain Weaving’s Tobias Wallace is the titular chaplain. He is “not an inquisitor or a priest” – more “a social worker in a fluoro vest” than a man of God.
Jolene, I Will Always Love You and 9 to 5: the genius of Dolly Parton in three songs
The world has lost a music legend in Dolly Parton, who has died at 80 after a “brief battle” with cancer. She’s remembered for her twanging country vocals, decades of hit recordings, Grammys, Emmys and a liberal splash of acting. But the biggest legacy Parton leaves is her songwriting, and three songs define her more than any others. Jolene, I Will Always Love You and 9 to 5 are not just memorable Parton songs – they are integral to popular music history.
Vaping is better than patches or gums for quitting smoking – updated review
If you’ve ever been a smoker, you’ll know how hard it is to quit. It can take as many as 30 attempts to finally break the habit. An updated Cochrane review assessed the evidence of which common tools are most effective to help people quit smoking for six months. It found e-cigarettes (or vapes) containing nicotine are more effective than other types of nicotine-replacement therapies (including patches and gums) and counselling support. Here’s what this means for people trying to quit smoking.

Nursing students are rejecting careers in aged care. A staffing crisis is coming
A ministerial advisory group delivered a blunt verdict on the state of aged care in New Zealand last week. The system, as it stands, cannot cope with the projected rise in the number of New Zealanders aged 65 or over, from 950,000 today to 1.3 million by 2040. Without change, the report warns, New Zealand faces a shortfall of more than 9,000 residential care beds within a decade. Problems are already emerging through workforce shortages, bed closures and overstretched carers.
Mixed results for One Nation and the Coalition in latest federal polls
There have been mixed messages emerging from the three federal polls released this week. In the DemosAU poll, the Coalition was up four points on the primary vote to 25% and One Nation was down five points to 24%. However, in the other two polls (YouGov and Morgan), One Nation was up two points and the Coalition down by one to 2.5 points, with One Nation’s primary vote lead over the Coalition increasing to 5–6 points.
