First Word to reissue Tall Black Guy's seminal 8 Miles to Moenart LP
First Word Records has announced a forthcoming 10th anniversary edition of 8 Miles to Moenart, the debut album from Detroit producer Tall Black Guy. Coming on October 18, the anniversary edition features two new jazz interpretations or reprises (“From Home To Work, And Back” and “Running The Motor”) recorded live. It also features a new intro — an audio manifesto called “Black Detroit” and an alternative mix of “Mon Amie De’troit” which was previously only on 7″ vinyl.
SF's electronic music scene remembers essential figure Alland Byallo, 1979-2023
“As Iʻm not DJing anymore, or trying to ‘get somewhere’ re: career with this project, itʻs not at the top of my list to get people seeing my fucking 40-year-old face everywhere” joked DJ-producer Alland Byallo in an interview with 48hills in 2019, showing off his flair for self-deprecating humor. Sorry snowflakes, if that quote bothers you, then I guess you really didn’t know who Byallo was.
First Floor #185 - On the Road Again
I’m going to keep the intro brief today. My big news of the week is that I’m going on tour (again) next month, and as you might imagine, I’m very excited about it. My most recent visit to the US was more than four years ago, and it’s been even longer since I was last on the West Coast, so while the main point of this upcoming trip is obviously to talk about First Floor and my book, it’ll also be great to see friends, family and many of the places where I spent my younger years.
In Loving Memory of Alland Byallo (1979 - 2023)
“Learn the history. Read the books, dig through the records, enjoy the process. You’ll get so much more out of creative life if you’re not racing to be a star.” Those were the golden words of wisdom DJ, producer, designer, gourmet cook, and all-around underground hero Alland Byallo dropped this July in an interview with 5Mag, as he neared the 20th anniversary of his career in techno. Alland, who passed away suddenly on August 10th, was an ace at heeding his own advice.
First Floor #184 - What Are You Really Mad About?
Much of the time, the dance music “discourse”—and yes, the scare quotes are intentional—on social media isn’t worth acknowledging, let alone engaging with, and thankfully, whatever topic people are arguing about usually fades into the background within a day or two. During the last week or so, however, the debate around the rising use of pop edits in dance music, particularly in spaces and at events thought to be “underground,” has been practically inescapable.

Parlor Music – Vinyl Campaign | Eric Douglas Porter
Here we are a new year and a new artist on the scene! Just kidding, it’s me Afrikan Sciences but I have stripped away the mysterious moniker which is usually confused for a term rather than an individual. I decided to present a project under the name my parents gave me at birth. Something about growing in age causes us to reflect at times. This project is special in that it’s a reflection of where I am at this moment in time, Looking forward and propelling from whence I have come.

Journey Into Mr Re - Vinyl Campaign
Well the time is nigh to revisit some of my more recent releases and bring them into the physical realm for all of you record players out there. I figured I would give this release first dibs to see what the vibe was and whether or not the many who have asked when this or that track was coming to vinyl. Here is the chance to make it so! I’m sincerely excited to share this music with those who may not necessarily find satisfaction on digital only releases.
All Ears: 17 music releases to look forward to in 2020
Between embargoes and secret release dates that see artists dropping projects when a Twitter trend is to their benefit, it’s a little perplexing assembling a strong list of music projects that accelerate the concept of “sound forward.” Hence, there is some GOOD music coming that I can’t talk about. Embargo is a dirty, dirty word. But this list, 17 for 2020, proves great projects are on the books too.

American Barbecue In Europe: London, Paris | Tasting Table
In Bangkok, gargantuan tomahawks are all the rage right now. In Paris, a slew of restaurants is serving baby back ribs, pork belly and brisket. Meanwhile in London, the recently opened Texas Joe's boasts a smoker that can tenderize 500 pounds of meat at a time. Yes, it's official: American barbecue has reached international cult status. Barbecue is a national treasure, a tradition that's passionately guarded by those who grew up with it—especially Southerners.
