The Faithful - Photographs by Alys Tomlinson
In her luminous black and white photographs taken over the course of five years at various pilgrimage sites, Alys Tomlinson finds a way to visualize faith and devotion. Every year, around six million pilgrims flock to the French town of Lourdes. Their destination is the site of an infamous vision experienced by a young girl in the late nineteenth century, who is said to have seen the Virgin Mary.
Modern-Day Catholic Pilgrimages
For five years photographer Alys Tomlinson visited Catholic pilgrimage sites in Ballyvourney, Ireland, Mount Grabarka, Poland, and Lourdes, France. Ex-Voto, published by Gost Books, is the culmination of the work she created on this journey. The book’s title refers to the physical offerings given in order to fulfill a vow – humble objects such as handmade wooden crosses and pages torn from notebooks – which connect the pilgrim with the landscape.
'Ex-Voto' a photobook by Alys Tomlinson
The projectI began the 'Ex-Voto' project five years ago, booking myself on a 'pilgrim package' tour to Lourdes, France. It was based on a curiosity and fascination to find out more about this Catholic pilgrimage site, known for its healing properties and spiritual power. I then expanded the project to include the Christian sites of Ballyvourney in Ireland and Grabarka in Poland. The project consists of portraits of pilgrims, still life shots of the ex-voto left behind and wider landscapes.
Joe Gilmore
Joe Gilmore, the former head barman of the American Bar at the Savoy Hotel, sadly passed away just before Christmas 2015 at the age of 93. We were lucky enough to meet him in January 2012 and the following is adapted from a profile written then. Belfast-born Joe (centre), who was head bartender from 1954 to 1975, joined Victor Gower (1981-1985 - second left), Peter Dorelli (1985-2003 - far left), Salim Khoury (2003-2007 - second right) and Erik Lorincz (2010-present - far right).
