Ever since I was penalized at my first job for arriving after 8:05 am (which rounded up to 8:15 am), I’ve been vehemently against time tracking. Which is why I surprised myself by wanting to try a time tracking experiment after digging into Laura Vanderkam’s work and new book Big Time: A Simple Path to Time Abundance.* Laura writes extensively about time tracking (and I’m a big fan of her teachings), so I (somewhat) hesitantly decided I’d try it.

The summer of 2016 was the first (and only?) time I experienced total time autonomy. I had several glorious months of time freedom in the liminal space between studenthood and adulthood (in between applying for jobs, of course). Looking back, I was far too naïve to realize what a precious gift that was (isn’t that how it always goes?). I lived with my now-husband (he graduated with a full-time job), so I took on most of our household duties.

In her memoir, Briefly Perfectly Human*, Alua Arthur describes the concept of “feeling fully used up” by the time she reaches her deathbed. I’ve clung to this idea since I read it. I love thinking about being here for a limited time with a bundle of energy I can pour into the world, my community, and most importantly, the people around me. And now I look for it everywhere, too.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

My grandmother owned a typewriter, and I was fortunate enough to have the chance to "play" with it as a kid.

Why did you become a journalist?

I believe in the transformative power of words and stories. Long after we are gone, all that remains are the stories about us.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

One story I'm exceptionally proud of is the short essay I wrote for Business Insider We flew across the globe to find long-lost relatives. Despite the hurdles, we connected with family and had the trip of a lifetime.
