Seasons of Glass and Iron by Amal El-Mohtar I’m pretty sure I’ll be an outlier on Amal El-Mohtar’s short story collection, Seasons of Glass and Iron (2026), so take my reaction with a hefty grain of salt. I’m generally a fan of El-Mohtar’s, and stylistically, I remain so here; the writing on a sentence/language level is wonderful. But while the style often won me over, too often the story did not. Which, in a collection of stories, is somewhat of an issue.

The nameless narrator is a robot assassin who, after achieving independence from their programming, secluded themself at the abandoned New York Botanical Garden, where they have remained in isolation for 20 years.
