Multicentre evaluation of renal impairment in thoracic surgery (MERITS): a retrospective cohort study

Discussion MERITS is the largest study to examine AKI after thoracic surgery and one of the largest such studies in a surgical population.4–6 Previous single-centre studies showed AKI rates that varied from 5.9% after all lung resections4 to 6.8% and 10% after lung cancer resections.5 6 Our earlier single-centre pilot study incorporating all procedures found a rate of 15.1%.12 The primary aim was to examine the unit variation in AKI incidence after thoracic surgery.
