Prevent Burnout and Enhance Sec Ops
COMMENTARY: Cybersecurity professionals are no strangers to high-pressure environments. With cyber threats growing in complexity and frequency, the job can be all-consuming. Security teams are expected to stay vigilant constantly, often with limited resources and support. So it is no surprise that the rigorous pace, resource constraints, and growing skills gap have contributed to high rates of burnout reported across the industry, with citing burnout as their reason for leaving a position.
Safeguarding municipalities against rising cyber threats
In an era marked by the escalating frequency of cyberattacks across industries, the public sector emerges as a particularly enticing target for cybercriminals due to its historical vulnerabilities. This susceptibility poses potentially costly consequences, making it imperative for municipalities to bolster their defenses. IBM underscores the severity of the issue by reporting that each cybersecurity incident in the public sector carries an average toll of $2.6 million.
Masked Application Attack Incident Report
Back to Blog Executive Summary On November 20, 2023, Blumira produced three findings that led to a Security Incident investigation regarding remote code being run on two separate XYZ Company hosts. The initial workstation host {hostname1} downloaded a malicious executable that was masked as “Advanced IP Scanner.” This file then began running automated Batch script commands and copying the behavior over to the server {DomainController2}.
The steps municipalities can take to prepare for rising cyberattacks
Cyberattacks are on the rise across all industries, but the history of the public sector’s weaker protections makes it an increasingly attractive target for cybercriminals with costly consequences. IBM asserts the toll of each cybersecurity incident in the public sector averages a substantial $2.6 million. In addition, according to the 2023 Verizon DBIR, Public Administration was the leader in the total number of incidents and the total number of breaches last year.

Fun times with a Facebook Scammer
Interesting Facebook Marketplace scam story for those that would like a laugh! Storytime: There are a couple of things that I've been trying to get rid of around the house, figured I'd just list them on FB marketplace to see if anyone could use them. One of those items is an older John Deere snowblower. I post this on FB MP and within seconds I get a response. "Wow! That was quick!" I thought. Someone must have really needed this and maybe setup an alert.

Defensive cybersecurity fundamentals
What you'll learn Instructor Schedule Everyone talks about the intrusion kill chain (sometimes called the “cyber kill chain”)—a model for actionable intelligence in which defenders align enterprise defensive capabilities to the specific processes an adversary might undertake to target that enterprise. However, much of what is discussed publicly is misinformation and scare tactics.
How to Explain Your "Confusing" Job to Your Family
The holidays are coming, and so are the questions about what you do from relatives—clueless, curious, and caring, alike. “What do you do again?” might be the most common question you field as you’re passing around slices of pie. So, how do you describe your job to your family in a way that they’ll not only understand, but also respect? The worst thing you could say is “It’s complicated.” Or, “No one ever understands what I do.” One: It’s lazy to give up so easily on describing your position.

Hardening a Unix application server
Hardening the servers can be described as the art of making the most secure configuration possible without compromising the ability of the system to perform its primary business function. This can be a particularly difficult balancing act as restricting access to users and processes must be tempered with the fact that the server must still perform its primary function properly, and system administrators must still be able to access the system to perform their duties.

How to Be Your Own PR Person
Do you have your own PR person? Unless you’re a celebrity, the answer is probably no. (And if you are a celebrity, hi!) However, that doesn’t mean you’re off the hook when it comes to building a strong reputation—in your office and in your industry. You need to advocate for yourself. No one else is going to push for you to get that job, that raise, or even that project that you’re totally qualified to lead.
Infosystir (n) - Like one of the guys, will punch you in the throat if needed and then hug it out.
Regarding @tableflipclub I normally wouldn't give this stuff a second glance. More girls bitching about unfair pay/opportunities. But since you asked here we go. Do I believe them? I border on the line between not wanting to give a fuck about what they are saying and trying to believe that there is that much of an abundance of these type of companies out there. Because honestly I haven't had any bad experiences like they are referring to that have kept me down.

Last year DerbyCon 3.0 was my first hacker con ever, and I just sat down from a long week at DerbyCon 4.0. In this year I've now been to 7 total. I've gone from a lowly attendance goer with no clue of who anyone was and zero self confidence to a conference organizer, blog writer, speaker, and volunteer with 0.1% self confidence. It's been an amazing journey of learning, networking, experience, and fun. My first DerbyCon got me hooked.
7 Better Ways to Answer "What Do You Do"
The question “What do you do?” has basically become synonymous with “Who are you?” There’s a reason it almost always follows “What’s your name?” in polite conversation: It’s helpful. It’s get-to-know-you shorthand. The one-word answer to “what do you do?” allows people categorize us and gives them a snapshot of what we do or who we are. But there’s also a dark underbelly to introducing ourselves with this kind of shorthand: When labels go wrong, they can lead to stereotypes.
