Heatwaves, higher costs and shrinking footfall: retailers feel the pressure

Footfall fell across the board in June as shoppers stayed at home to avoid the heatwave, according to the latest British Retail Consortium – Sensormatic data. Total UK footfall decreased by 3.4%, down from -2.6% in May, high street footfall decreased by 6.2% in June (YoY), down from -1.5% in May, retail park footfall decreased by 0.3% in June (YoY), up from -0.5% in May, and shopping centre footfall decreased by 2.5% in June (YoY), down from -2.4% in May.

Jollyes doubles down on physical retail with plan for 250-store estate

UK discount pet retailer Jollyes has announced plans to double its store estate over the next five years, going from 123 to over 250 stores nationwide. The announcement comes in the wake of strong financial results for the year ending 31 May 2026, with total revenue growth of 8.7%as sales hit £169 million, with transactions rising by 7% year on year. Like-for-like sales growth (excluding new stores) grew by 4.3%.
