Amber Chandler is a National Board Certified middle school ELA teacher in Hamburg, New York with a Master’s Degree in Literature, as well as a School Building Leader certification. She is the 2018 Association for Middle Level Educators’ “Educator of the Year.”

My View: Bell-to-bell should also apply to the adults in the room

Everyone has been talking about how addictive cellphones are. Families complain about how they disrupt dinners, and teachers are tired of competing with them. Because the phones win almost every single time. It is not just the kids. We adults find ourselves pretending that we are on our phone for work email, when we are really scrolling, shopping or playing a dumb but soothing game where we don’t really have to pay attention.

Another Voice: State's proposed 'bell to bell' cellphone ban is a necessity

On principle, as an educator, I tend to be on the absolutely-not side of banning things, but when Gov. Kathy Hochul and Melinda Person, president of New York State United Teachers, joined forces to finally do something about the cellphone situation, I breathed a sigh of relief. They are calling for a “Bell to Bell” ban, prohibiting students from cellphone use during the school day with a few exceptions, such as medical monitoring. Why might we need such a sweeping and definitive action?
