A Liberal's Guide to the Iowa State Fair
Those who know me well know I am a fan of the Iowa State Fair. I go with my kids, I go with my extended family, I see shows in the grandstand, watch livestock judging, eat everything on a stick I can find and generally love the whole vibe. But often friends, particularly those who tend to vote blue tell me they don’t like the fair. Or that they have never been. Or that they feel like it would not have anything to offer that they would like.
Please speak up for my family.
Under tremendous pressure from Kim Reynolds, Iowa Republicans are fast-tracking a bill that would make Iowa the first state in the US to strip its citizens of fundamental human rights. House Study Bill 242 (HSB242) would remove protections from Iowa civil rights code for trans and non-binary people. As the parent of a transgender adult son, this directly affects my family and my kid along with thousands of other Iowans. I hope you will speak out by contacting members of the Iowa House.
Losing the Planned Parenthood book sale is hard, but there is good news
Like so many other Iowans I was surprised by Planned Parenthood’s plans to end a more than six-decade-old biannual book sale that raises money for sex education across Iowa. It is a loss that will be mourned. But, as someone working in the nonprofit world, I understand the decision, as hard as it is. With so many attacks on the reproductive freedom of Iowans lately, the news felt like yet another setback in our fight to preserve comprehensive sex education and reproductive health care.
