1 INTRODUCTION Age-specific cervical cancer screening guidelines, for example, primary cytology screening for younger women with a switch to primary human papillomavirus (HPV) screening for older women, have often been used to minimize unnecessary referrals for younger women who have a general higher HPV prevalence and are more likely to have a transient HPV infection.
