Amie Steffen’s Biography

BA in political communication (journalism minor) from the University of Northern Iowa '06. Started full-time at The (Fergus Falls, Minn.) Daily Journal in April of 2006. Left there in January of 2007 when I took my previous job at the Waterloo/Cedar Falls (Iowa) Courier, which I held until Oct. 22, 2012, when my position and several others were eliminated. Have freelanced for various publications; currently don't freelance anywhere.

At The Courier, my main "beat" was live entertainment; namely, bands and other musical acts coming to town. These artist interviews also went into our monthly Pulse Magazine, which serves eastern Iowa, and the weekly Pulse insert in the Courier.

I also did general assignment news, features and special sections, including breaking and deadline reporting and enterprise reporting.

In 2009, I won an investigative journalism award through the Associated Press Managing Editors of Iowa for an article about the lack of storm/emergency shelters available to people living in mobile home parks, and what their options are during a tornado.

I love to write, but I also hope that my writing informs people. That is my goal as a journalist.
