Abstract Cytomorphometry analysis in exfoliative cytology for the early identification of dysplasia in Oral Potentially Malignant Disorders (OPMDs) has gained interest. However, there are no standardized quantitative cytomorphometric reference values for dysplasia. Meta-analysis of cytomorphometry parameters to support a recommendation of quantitative values for discriminating between OPMDs as non-dysplastic or dysplastic lesions was carried out.

We read with great interest the longitudinal surveillance study by Palatnik et al. 2025 that reports on malignant transformation (MT) of oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) using a large electronic health record based cohort followed up to a decade [1]. The authors have reported an overall MT rate of 4.69%, where oral leukoplakia and oral lichen planus accounted for the largest proportion of conversions, that is, 34.7%, underscoring the need for long-term follow-up and patient compliance.
