The biggest surprise from today's inflation print
September's quarter inflation data was higher than expected. The headline consumer price index rose by 1.2% over the quarter (slightly higher than consensus and our own estimates of 1.1%) and annual growth slowed to 5.4% from 6% last quarter. Inflation peaked at 7.8% in the December quarter last year and has slowed significantly since then, but there is more work to do to bring inflation back to the Reserve Bank of Australia’s 2-3% target.

Inflation – why it matters for investment markets - AdviserVoice
Key points The shift from high inflation to low inflation has been a key tailwind for investment returns over the last 40 years – in particular it has allowed capital growth in excess of growth in earnings and rents. A long-term stabilisation in inflation around central bank targets which is our base case would remove this tailwind but still allow reasonable returns, whereas a sustained break higher in inflation (beyond the current likely transient inflation spike) could start to reverse it.

The needs and expectations of shopping centre customers has been rapidly evolving for many years, and while customers still value a traditional brick-and-mortar experience with quality customer service, they now want more than just a shopping centre. 13 tips for managing your personal finances better, according to one of Australia's top economists
A few months ago Reserve Bank Governor Phillip Lowe provided four common sense points we should all keep in mind regarding borrowing to finance a home. (The Governor’s speech can be found here). I thought they made sense and so summarised them in a tweet to which someone replied that every checkout operator knows them. Which got me thinking that maybe many do know them, but a lot don’t, otherwise Australians would never have trouble with their finances.
