Why are the numbers for the new MSME registration system so low?
Since many companies have a turnover of less than Rs 40 lakh and hence do not need to be GST compliant, it rendered them ineligible to register on the Udyam system. Such a requirement was removed by the MoMSME on March 5 this year. (File photo) In June 2020, the MoMSME issued a notification revising the definition of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and introduced a new registration system — the Udyam. With effect from July 1, 2020, the revisions in the MSME definition were three-fold.
What the budget can do for MSMEs
Written by Amrita Pillai | January 15, 2021 8:24:31 pm An unmitigated loss of demand and revenue in the past year would have impacted the ability of Indian MSMEs, especially given the vast informality that mars the sector. The Micro, Small and Medium enterprises (MSMEs) are the largest employers in the country after agriculture.
Nudge towards formalisation
Written by Radhika Pandey , Amrita Pillai | October 16, 2020 4:05:10 am It is important to understand how this will bode for a vastly informal MSME sector. A new process of classification and registration for small businesses took off on July 1. The enterprise or the “Udyam” as it is termed under the new Udyam registration process will register itself online based on self-declaration.
Modi govt has come to the rescue of MSME financing. It now needs to give one extra push

A Better Lending
Written by Radhika Pandey , Amrita Pillai | Published: July 14, 2020 4:04:44 am Even before COVID, the MSME sector was marred by rampant informality, stunted growth and bore a heavy share of the compliance burden. The government’s initiatives announced in the stimulus package have been geared towards helping MSMEs maintain liquidity and for ensuring greater credit availability.
CHAMPIONS can ease MSME pain only if it effectively helps implement govt’s relief measures

How the relief package for MSME sector shortchanges women
The Indian government recently announced six specific relief measures for the Micro Small and Medium Enterprises sector under the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan. They include a redefinition of these enterprises and steps to enable easier access to credit and equity infusion. The true extent of the damage to livelihoods in the MSME sector on account of the coronavirus pandemic cannot be estimated accurately yet.
Adding A Dash Of Fintech To MSME Financing And Operations
The measures provided under the MSME stimulus package do not seem helpful in resolving such immediate issues that these business units are facing. It rather seems to want to nudge units to borrow widely, straddling an uncertain path to deal with this crisis. Fintech startup Zaggle has recently partnered with payments technology giant Visa to launch innovative payment solutions for SMEs in India.

Unsafe, Unhygienic and Inaccessible: The Sorry State of Delhi’s District Courts
Startling images of a record room in the Rohini district court have surfaced, bringing the spotlight back on the infrastructure in Delhi’s district courts. In a complaint letter to the district judge, advocate Birender Sangwan noted how the room meant to store and preserve judicial records was a complete mess, replete with seepage from a nearby toilet and with electric wires hanging loose. This is not the first time the conditions inside a court complex have come under question.
The art of writing a judgment
The fate of the governance of the National Capital Territory of Delhi was decided earlier this month by the Supreme Court. But one had to pore over 500 pages of widely awaited judgment in order to understand the demarcation of powers between the Lieutenant Governor and the elected government. It was yet another reminder about the need for crisp and on-message judgments for many reasons.
Steering reform in clogged courts
The spotlight was on the Bombay High Court in early May when one of its judges sat well past midnight hearing cases before the month-long summer break kicked in. While this was a rare occasion in the court’s 156-year history, the incident highlights the systemic issues common to courts in India. Ad hoc measures such as what the judge did, though laudable and well meaning, hardly resolve these issues. Instead, they can only be addressed through a transformation of court processes.
