Sonam Wangchuk’s hunger strike exposes the limits of moral protest in today’s India
“My body is losing muscle, but my heart is still working. Don’t ask me to break my fast. Instead, join me on the march to Parliament on July 20,” he appeals in a video message. Even on the 21st day of his indefinite hunger strike, Wangchuk remains resolute in his demands for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the NEET paper leak controversy and sweeping reforms to India’s examination system.

Some protesters tried to obstruct the exercise, leading to a brief commotion, but police personnel exercised maximum restraint and completed the operation successfully, it added. Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Sachin Sharma told PTI that Wangchuk was shifted to a hospital in accordance with the Delhi High Court’s order after his health deteriorated. “Following the directions of the High Court and according to the health conditions and medical advice, we have taken Sonam Wangchuk to appropriate government hospital which was much needed medical intervention and under medical supervision,” he said.
Chhattisgarh assembly: Sai govt defeats no-confidence motion after 14-hour debate
The Congress opened the attack by tabling a 136-point chargesheet, alleging that the BJP government had failed farmers, tribals, youth and women during its two-and-a-half years in office. Replying to the debate, Sai dismissed the motion as “hollow, baseless and a political drama”. He remarked that if there were a PhD course in “lying and corruption”, Congress members would be specialists.

• U.S. strikes hit “surveillance sites, military logistics infrastructure, underground weapons storage, and maritime capabilities,” it added. • Iran in turn struck U.S. allies in the Gulf on Friday, as both sides targeted infrastructure while shipping in the Strait of Hormuz came under further assault. • Iranian state media earlier said at least five bridges were struck in the south in U.S. attacks on Friday.
BJP’s push for one-party state has a flip side. It could be Congress’s chance for revival
This incredible win for the BJP will, ironically, also open up the space needed for the Congress to rediscover its mojo as the BJP’s only pan-national challenger. I know this will draw much scepticism, even derision from both vicious haters and too-often-disappointed lovers of the Congress. But Modi, Shah and the BJP will agree. They understand that the only reasonable challenge to them comes from the Congress. Go back to Modi’s campaign speeches over the years.
India moves fasting activist to hospital, police say
On Thursday, the Delhi High Court asked authorities to watch his health closely and intervene if needed, in response to a petition asking authorities to force-feed him as his health weakened. Protesters from the CJP said they would march to India’s parliament on July 20, when the monsoon session begins, to press their demand for Pradhan’s resignation and seek exam reforms.
