September's Bird of the Month
It would be hard not to notice an American Avocet – these large shorebirds, with their long blue legs and delicate-looking upturned bill are almost unmistakable. When taking flight, adults often give a high pitched kleet-kleet-kleet call, circling overhead with their neck extended and long legs straight out behind them. American Avocets specialize in using ephemeral wetlands of the arid western United States, and are effective indicators of environmental stressors within western wetlands.

Letter: DL schools plan involved serious thought, compromise
I would especially like to thank Brian Berg and the staff of Zerr-Berg Architects for going above and beyond the call of duty to truly engage our entire community in this referendum plan.It is impossible to formulate a plan that will please everyone. For every person who told us they didn't like the gym at the high school there was someone who said it wasn't big enough.

Nancy Young, a Detroit Lakes graduate, has started a community group to provide information and gather input from the public in regards to the bond referendum the school district is planning to bring to the voters in November of 2018.The plans for this referendum are still in the beginning stages, and the community group is an excellent way to participate in the process.
DL School Board member apologizes to preschool teachers
Yes, our kindergarten readiness statistics were shocking, but our area preschools do amazing work. All that statistics can do is highlight a problem that we, as a community are going to have to work together to solve. My sincere apologies to our area preschool providers who may have felt that my comment was directed at them. I very much appreciate the work that you do and the challenges you face.-- Amy Erickson, Detroit Lakes(Erickson is a member of the Detroit Lakes School Board)
Lemonade Pie Cookies
To make egg wash, in small bowl, beat egg with splash water until well blended. Set aside. Unroll pie crusts. Spread lemon curd on 1 of the crusts, leaving 1/2-inch border around edge. Place second crust on top. With 3-inch cookie cutter, cut out cookies by gently pressing down through both crust layers. With handle of knife, press edges to seal; cut “x” in center of each cookie pie. Brush each cookie with egg wash; sprinkle with sugar. Place on cookie sheet.
Rudolph Jell-O shots will definitely lead to reindeer games this Christmas
Share Tweet Pin Share Tumble Saved Combined comments & shares on social media Yes, it’s true — I’ve managed to corrupt one of history’s most loved and adored children’s festive fables, and I’m not even sorry. Shhh, don’t tell Santa, but Rudolph is now a boozy Jell-O shot. Those poor, overworked, underpaid reindeer deserve some festive fun too, right? Right! And I'm here to give it to them... and to you too. Get ready to wow your friends and family in the cutest way ever.
