Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
Writing about shopping online for Shop Online 123, an online shopping companion to Better Homes & Gardens that never saw the light of day.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes, of course. I'm not that young.
How is social media changing news?
By making it faster and more accessible, and by providing new ways for journalists to meet each other and to find sources.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Murphy Brown. Or maybe Amy Amanda "Triple A" Allen from the A Team. But mostly Murphy Brown.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
It means you know enough about the beat you cover to talk to the right sources, get both sides of the story, and put the news in context.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
Enh. I've yet to see one that wasn't trying too hard to be funny.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Email. Or a Twitter shout-out works, too.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
A Flip cam (still!), Android phone, MacBook Air, iProcrastinate
What's your favorite social network?
Facebook
Who do you wish followed you?
Andy Revkin
Why did you become a journalist?
So that I'd constantly be learning new things and talking to interesting new people.
