Today’s global challenges of prolonged fuel crises, rising consumer prices, dwindling natural resources and new workforce pressures demand disruptive innovators willing to test new technologies and business models that enable countries to rapidly transform their economies. Accelerating these national economic transitions requires a new playbook, and climate startups are one of the most important tools countries have to meet their decarbonization and climate resilience goals.

Abstract Retroelements have a critical role in shaping eukaryotic genomes. For instance, site-specific non-long terminal repeat retrotransposons have spread widely through preferential integration into repetitive genomic sequences, such as microsatellite regions and ribosomal DNA genes1,2,3,4,5,6. Despite the widespread occurrence of these systems, their targeting constraints remain unclear.

In the last few years, coalitions of countries, businesses, governments and other actors have announced increasingly ambitious commitments to address the climate crisis. These have included plans to dramatically ramp up renewables, phase down fossil fuels, green the financial sector, halt deforestation, reform food systems and agriculture, and more. A number of new pledges are expected to be unveiled at the current climate summit in Baku, such as those under the COP29 Presidency’s Action Agenda.
