South Africa diesel prices are set to rise by as much as R1.60 a litre from Wednesday, 5 August 2026, while petrol prices ease slightly at the pumps. The increase, as reported by IOL, will fall hardest on 0.05% sulphur diesel at R1.60 a litre, with 0.005% sulphur diesel up by R1.42. Petrol moves the other way, with 93 unleaded down R0.19 a litre and 95 unleaded down R0.14.

Durban VAT fraud convictions have landed Khanyisile Casianna Gumede, 53, an effective 18 years in prison, after the Durban Regional Court sentenced her over false tax returns filed in 2018. Gumede was convicted on five counts of fraud involving roughly R3.7 million and one count of money laundering, as reported by The Citizen. She was the registered representative of her company, GG Catering and General Services CC, for Value-Added Tax (VAT) purposes.

EU AI labelling rules took effect on Sunday, 2 August 2026, forcing the companies behind generative AI systems to mark deepfakes, synthetic images, cloned voices and machine-written text wherever it could pass as human-made. The obligations sat inside the European Union’s AI Act, the bloc’s sweeping rulebook for artificial intelligence, and applied to what the law called providers, as reported by The Guardian.
