Allocation and characterisation factors for absolute environmental sustainability assessment
Abstract Absolute environmental sustainability assessment (AESA) enables the comparison of the environmental burdens from economic sectors against sector-specific thresholds for environmental sustainability. Implementing AESA requires data to establish sector-specific sustainability thresholds and to characterise the environmental burden of elementary flows that are exchanged between the sector and the environment. Yet, a reusable dataset for AESA is currently lacking.
Prospective Life Cycle Assessment of Alternative Fuels and Carbon Capture in Swiss Gas-Fired Power Plants Click to copy article link Article link copied!
Scope The study focuses on Switzerland as a case study and considers two time horizons for when e-fuels are expected to become a market commodity: the short term (2035) and the long term (2050).
Transition pathways to electrified chemical production within sector-coupled national energy systems The chemical industry's transition to net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is particularly challenging due to the carbon inherently contained in chemical products, eventually released to the environment. Fossil feedstock-based production can be replaced by electrified chemical production, combining carbon capture and utilization (CCU) with electrolysis-based hydrogen.
A holistic platform for accelerating sorbent-based carbon capture - Nature
Abstract Reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions urgently requires the large-scale deployment of carbon-capture technologies. These technologies must separate CO2 from various sources and deliver it to different sinks1,2. The quest for optimal solutions for specific source–sink pairs is a complex, multi-objective challenge involving multiple stakeholders and depends on social, economic and regional contexts.

Indirect Electrochemical Cooling: Model-Based Performance Analysis and Working Fluid Selection
Cooling is essential for human living and consumes 3900 TWh/a of electricity worldwide, (1) corresponding to 16% of the total electricity consumption. With growing populations and economies, the global heating and cooling energy demand will increase substantially in the coming decades. (1,2) Given the increasing standards of living and climate change, in particular, a significant increase is anticipated for the cooling demand.
Methods, Models, and Metrics Home
This cross-journal-themed collection showcases selected examples aiming to quantify the benefits and trade-offs of green chemistry by providing assessment methods, models, indicators, and metrics. The collection is intended as a guide and accessible resource for the whole chemical community while helping authors to measure, compare, and describe the advantages and disadvantages of introducing green chemistry principles and approaches in their work.
Electrified hydrocarbon-to-oxygenates coupled to hydrogen evolution for efficient greenhouse gas mitigation - Nature Communications
General model description The bottom-up model is based on the methodology of the Technology Choice Model (TCM)41 and a recent publication by the authors8. The model can be used to calculate the environmental impact of large production systems and complete supply chains for chemicals and plastics while being in-line with the ISO standards for LCA42,43.
Comment on “How green is blue hydrogen?”
Abstract This paper is written in response to the paper “How green is blue hydrogen?” by R. W. Howarth and M. Z. Jacobson. It aims at highlighting and discussing the method and assumptions of that paper, and thereby providing a more balanced perspective on blue hydrogen, which is in line with current best available practices and future plant specifications aiming at low CO2 emissions.
Environmental trade-offs of direct air capture technologies in climate change mitigation toward 2100 - Nature Communications
Abstract Direct air capture (DAC) is critical for achieving stringent climate targets, yet the environmental implications of its large-scale deployment have not been evaluated in this context. Performing a prospective life cycle assessment for two promising technologies in a series of climate change mitigation scenarios, we find that electricity sector decarbonization and DAC technology improvements are both indispensable to avoid environmental problem-shifting.

From Unavoidable CO2 Source to CO2 Sink? A Cement Industry Based on CO2 Mineralization
The cement industry emits 7% of the global anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Reducing the GHG emissions of the cement industry is challenging since cement production stoichiometrically generates CO2 during calcination of limestone. In this work, we propose a pathway towards a carbon-neutral cement industry using CO2 mineralization. CO2 mineralization converts CO2 into a thermodynamically stable solid and byproducts that can potentially substitute cement.
