Cash Cobain Is Steering Drill Rap's Sexy Swerve Original
Drill music hasn't always been this fun. The subgenre's ominous beats and menacing lyrics infiltrated mainstream hip-hop over a decade ago, but its ascendant stars have been stalled by violence, police surveillance and the flattening effect of at-home copycats. Cash Cobain, the 26-year-old breakout rapper and producer from the Bronx, is helping to raise its trajectory.

Unknowingly Walking in the Footsteps of Gordon Parks
Times Insider explains who we are and what we do and delivers behind-the-scenes insights into how our journalism comes together. In Washington, D.C., the Anacostia River acts as both a physical and figurative divide. To the west of the river are the wealthy and predominantly white neighborhoods of Navy Yard and Capitol Hill; across the river sit the predominantly Black and low-income Ward 8 neighborhoods of Anacostia and Fairlawn.
The Bridge to Anacostia is Not Built Yet. But Here’s What We Could Learn.
How will the 11th Street Bridge Park change Anacostia? Developers and the community hope the park will enrich the community without displacing existing residents. Can this project be a model for equitable development or will it change Anacostia for the worse?
City Summer, Country Summer (Published 2020)
The Look 2020 A photographer and a writer separately explore black boyhood and the season. Photographs by Andre D. Wagner Text by Kiese Laymon Credit...Andre D. Wagner Black boys from Mississippi know the Black boys from New York. When we were young, their parents sent them down south one summer. We were as afraid of calling them beautiful as we were of calling them by their real names. If they were Chaka, Marcus, Stephon, Akil or Damon, we called them New York.

At Howard University, Homecoming Is a Pilgrimage
Surfacing “Coming to Howard for the first time was seeing the beauty of blackness,” one alumnus said. Written by Bianca Ladipo Photographs by Andre Wagner There’s no limit to how many people can join the celebration — the campus gates never close during the weekend. “Have you ever seen anything like this?” Ashley Maltbia-Burgess, a 2010 graduate of Howard University, asked. She was standing with a group of fellow alums and her wife, Ashlee, looking out onto the crowded campus lawn.
What Does Community Mean to Black Americans?
The American Road Trip Community This summer, four photographers and four writers drove around the United States. Each pair was guided by a unique theme — patriotism, tradition, community, youth — and a unifying question: What does America look like now?
Goodbye to Another New York Summer
The Look The season of the city’s streets belonging to us is coming to a close. Photographs by Andre Wagner Text by John Leland Produced by Eve Lyons Some New Yorkers live to get out of town in the summer, to country homes and beach rentals and European villas far from the din of this metropolis. Then there are those who wake up one sweaty morning and realize: The city belongs to us now. This time around, the season was like many before it — just hotter, wetter, smellier, more crowded and louder.
Meet SZA, the R&B Sensation With an Out-of-This-World Sound
SZA. At a Lower East Side apartment on an abnormally warm day in February, SZA walks into our shoot in vintage Tommy Hilfiger overalls, an oversized navy-blue vintage sweater, and Jordans. She immediately delves into horror stories about other people doing her hair and makeup to explain why, today, she’ll be doing her own. “I’ve only let one person do my hair and makeup and they did it right, I learned, and now I’m like let me take it from here.
The Shrinking Middle Class: Tales from New York City
In recent years, a peculiar phenomenon has developed in New York City: The cost of living has gone up as the unemployment rate has dropped. And yet the percentage of households with inadequate income has more or less remained the same. This dynamic is not only happening in the nation’s most populous city, but across the U.S. On one hand, there are encouraging signs of significant economic growth. The national unemployment rate is the lowest it’s been in 49 years.
A Place I Could Call My Own (Published 2018)
the look On growing up in the Bronx, and never truly leaving it. When I was born, my mother and father lived on the first floor of a six-story building in the Bronx that looked just like all the other buildings compressed on my block, and all the other buildings stretching to infinity outside. I shared a small room with my parents, my thin bed pushed into the corner and my window facing a brick wall. I was close enough to hear their fights at night.

Don’t Call Dua Lipa a Pop Star
Dua Lipa. Photo: Andre Wagner Pop stars usually get a bad rap — they’re hard to deal with and even harder to please (cough, cough Mariah Carey) but Dua Lipa, whose name, fittingly means “love” in Albanian, is the complete opposite. The minute she walks into our shoot, wearing a mix of cool, independent designers so perfectly styled she looks like a model who just left a runway show, she says hello to everyone on set and ogles the racks of clothes like a kid in a candy store.
The Impolite Pleasure of People-Watching
the look The Impolite Pleasure of People-Watching Observation is, at once, a glorified lack of activity and an invasion of privacy. But there’s so much to see in New York. Photographs by Daniel Arnold and Andre Wagner Text by Darcie Wilder Produced by Eve Lyons July 14, 2018 Image Before cellphones were fun, when the idea that anything may distract you from New York’s never-ending street theater was unimaginable, I would watch the world happen around me.
What My Father Gave Me (Published 2018)
the look Father’s Day is a reminder of the traits and rituals that we pass down, often unwittingly, through DNA and demonstration. Photographs by Andre Wagner Text by Michael Gold Produced by Eve Lyons June 16, 2018 Image Credit...Andre D. Wagner for The New York Times The image can feel inescapable this time of year: a man glancing at his reflection, running his hand over his newly smooth skin.
Influence of Photographer Gordon Parks
The opening of a new exhibition of work by the late photographer Gordon Parks offers a chance to reflect on some of Parks’ most iconic imagery relating to civil rights. In collaboration with the Gordon Parks Foundation, ‘I Am You | Part 2’ opened at the Jack Shainman Gallery in New York on Feb. 15 and focuses on work from the late 1940s through the ’60s. TIME asked Andre D.
Everyday Excellence
As a child, I learned during our shortest month about Martin and Malcolm, Harriet and Sojourner. At home and in school they told of Benjamin Banneker’s almanacs, Madam C.J. Walker’s hair products and subsequent wealth, George Washington Carver’s peanuts, Crispus Attucks’s heroism in dying first, and even what Dr. Ben Carson did with those conjoined twins. Black History Month has taken these mortals from heroes to idols, out of both pride and desperation.
Off the Beaten Holiday Path
When I think about the winter holidays in New York, Fifth Avenue shopping in Manhattan and Rockefeller Center is usually the first thing that comes to mind, rightfully so. It’s the destination for families near and far, a staple for classic Christmas movies, and the holiday spirit and energy is practically unmatched. As wonderful as that all may be, I decided to take a look at holidaygoers off the beaten path.
After-School Special
the look Andre Wagner captured the brief window when kids run New York. Photographs by Andre Wagner Text by Rembert Browne Produced by Eve Lyons Dec. 9, 2017 Image Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. It really started around my fifth year in New York — both friends and strangers telling me that I needed to accept the harsh reality of becoming a “New Yorker.” This conversation was always awkward, less because of the premise and more the tone: It was consistently less congratulatory and more gotcha.
An Alternate Introduction
My friend and favorite photographer, Andre D. Wagner, just released his debut collection. It’s a monograph; it’s called Here For The Ride. My friend and favorite photographer, a bearded Bushwick brother by way of Omaha, Nebraska, has been cataloging New York City for the better part of the last decade and I think at this point it would be fair to say he’s become one of the city’s most prominent young photographers.
An Ode to Acts of Kindness on the New York City Subway (Published 2017)
The Look “The New York City subway is this great equalizer,” said the photographer Andre Wagner, who spent four years taking photographs on its platforms and in its cars. “For this brief moment in time, we’re all in it together.” Sept. 16, 2017 Image Credit...Andre D. Wagner for The New York Times For many New Yorkers, their subway line is a second home.
Sunday Best in Harlem and Brooklyn
Andre Wagner’s father was a minister in Omaha, so church on Sunday was an all-day affair. The day would start when his grandfather picked up the family in what he called his “Sunday van.” Andre sang in the choir, went to Sunday school and usually ended up having a meal at the home of another preacher. “You were spending time with people from church and being part of the community,” he said.
Capturing Love, the Brooklyn Way (Published 2017)

Seen on the Streets: Fashion Mavericks, a Stylish Couple and Fran Lebowitz
“I’m not really interested in color,” said Andre Wagner, a Brooklyn photographer who specializes in street style. “Black and white photography just has a harmony that I like.” In much of his work, Mr. Wagner’s subjects are glaring at the camera. “I want to capture that initial moment when they recognize me,” he said.
HBO’s New Star Issa Rae on Goals, Being Awkward, and Changing Hollywood
Photo: Andre Wagner “I still feel regular. I’m not going to lie,” Issa Rae tells me when I ask her how it feels to be the first black woman to helm her own TV show on HBO. Regular is a word she returned to a few times when describing her artistic approach, but by the end of our conversation, I felt as if Issa Rae were the definition of the popular term black girl magic, and not at all Insecure, as her new show is titled.
