Aspen Acres fire: The fire remains active even as some roads open and evacuation orders are lifted

All evacuation orders for the Beulah area affected by the Aspen Acres fire burning in Pueblo and Custer counties have been lifted as of Tuesday evening. Re-entry cards are no longer required. Some roads previously closed by the fire are now open. That includes Colorado Highway 96 between Pueblo and Westcliffe and Colorado 67 between Florence and Wetmore.

Aspen Acres fire: Residents start to return home as firefighters gain more ground

Recent precipitation has helped firefighters make progress in fighting the Aspen Acres fire burning in Pueblo and Custer counties. It's now 97,083 acres and 28% contained. There are 1,900 personnel assigned to fighting the fire. Most areas of southern Pueblo County, which has been under mandatory evacuations, will see residents return under a pre-evacuation status, according to the Pueblo County Sheriff's office. This comes not long after evacuation notices were downgraded in Fremont County.

Most recent update: 8:20 a.m., Thursday, July 2, 2026 Fire officials were frank Wednesday as they assessed the conditions relating to the Aspen Acres fire burning in Pueblo and Custer counties. "There will be additional structures lost," said Phil Daniels with the state department of fire prevention and control at the Wednesday afternoon briefing. Even then, evacuation notices were expanding to Wetmore and beyond, closing portions of Highway 96.
