A woman who accidentally threw away her winning lottery ticket worth €1m (£850,000) had incredible luck after it was found two days later in a pile of rubbish. The lottery player, who asked not to be identified, checked her ticket at a small shop in Bitonto, Puglia, Italy, only for the terminal to flash up a message reading “non-payable”. The woman consequently threw it away, assuming the message meant it was worthless.

Britain could be braced for yet another heatwave, with dramatic new weather maps showing up to 35C on the cards and 14 UK areas set to experience scorching heat. The latest charts suggest the UK's run of extreme sun isn't done yet. Forecasters say temperatures are expected to climb steadily and, by next Wednesday (August 12), large parts of the country could be warming up again. This will especially be felt in the south and east of England, with Cambridgeshire and Norfolk among the hotspots.
