Review: FANDANGO FOR BUTTERFLIES (AND COYOTES) brings hope and heartache to the La Jolla Playhouse
FANDANGO FOR BUTTERFLIES (AND COYOTES), inspired by real-life stories brings empathy, hope, and heartache to the La Jolla Playhouse stage through September 25th. The show opens at the start of a gathering at a sanctuary located in Chula Vista (originally New York where the piece was created). The event brings characters from various backgrounds and experiences together to celebrate and support each other.
La Jolla Playhouse Announces First Four Shows of 2022/23 Season
La Jolla Playhouse has announced the first four productions of its 2022/2023 season: the new musical Lempicka: A New Musical (June/July 2022), book and lyrics by Carson Kreitzer, music by Matt Gould, choreographed by Raja Feather Kelly, and directed by Tony Award winner Rachel Chavkin (Broadway's Hadestown); the world premiere of Here There Are Blueberries (July/August 2022), by Tony Award nominee Moisés Kaufman (Playhouse's 33 Variations, Broadway's I Am My Own Wife) and Amanda Gronich,...
Fandango for Butterflies (and Coyotes)
Fandangos are vibrant gatherings in which music and dance bring stories of a community to life. For a group of immigrants gathering in a community center on the eve of a city-wide ICE raid, this night’s fandango serves a vital purpose: to resurrect the culture they left behind.
Update - Andrea Thome
An update: Writing has been so many things for me. It’s been healing, when I was working on Walland after losing my mom. It’s been challenging, humbling, gratifying and stupefying. It’s successfully launched me into a year-long funk I’m desperately trying to work my way out of. Writing is like a fucking box of chocolates. I wrote three contemporary romance novels from 2016-2018, and the experience of creating and getting those books into the hands of readers who seemed to enjoy them changed my life.
We Can't Wait for Anyone to Tell Our Stories: Angie Cruz Interviewed by Andrea Thome - BOMB Magazine
I met Angie Cruz back in 2000 at a Latina Playwrights Festival at New York City’s seminal WOW Café Theatre (billed as “The Oldest Collectively Run Performance Space for Women and/or Trans Artists in the Known Universe”). My play Alley Rats was being featured, as was work by fellow playwright Adelina Anthony, who brought Cruz to the festival and from that moment, we knew we wanted to be in conversation. At the time, Angie had just sold her first novel, Soledad.
THE BLOG I NEVER WANTED TO WRITE
It’s almost midnight, and sleep won’t come. My mind is racing. You see, our community is in crisis. We’ve been being poisoned by a company called Sterigenics, and it’s been happening without our knowledge since the mid-1980’s. Our cancer rates are ten times higher than the national average, but only in a ten-mile radius surrounding this plant.
EXPECTATIONS
My mom gave me plenty of great advice over the course of her lifetime. Don’t “should” on yourself. (I should do this! I shouldn’t have done that.) Don’t date men you wouldn’t consider marrying. It’s a waste of your time and theirs. Don’t expect people to be more than they’re capable of being. But my favorite, and one of the hardest ideas to actually execute is this: Try to live a life free from expectation. It’s a tall order, particularly for someone who likes to plan ahead the way I do.
The Writing Is The Best Part
Many people tell me that they’ve always wanted to write a book but don’t think they could actually do it. I always encourage them to try. Each of us has a story to tell, it’s just a matter of finding the time. What I don’t tell people is this: The writing is the easy part. Because once the book is written, they should be ready to spend the better part of their days selling themselves and their work to anyone who will listen. I can promise you that unless you’re either lucky...
