Freelancing for student magazines - they paid $10 a article.That was 30 years ago. Ironically that's more than some MSM outlets pay now

Yes, for years.

As a journalist is makes reporting much easier, both news gathering, but also cold calling contacts.

Email first with three or four key bullet points. Then put me in contact with the talent.

Browser, iPhone, word processor, Dropbox. What more do you need?

Why did you become a journalist?
So I could get paid the write.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
With a friend I launched the first school newspaper at St Edmund primary school in 1979 while in grade 7. The authorities shut us down.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
Always the last one I wrote.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Remove your ego from the story - its about them, not you.
