Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

I interviewed Hamilton Harris for his documentary, 'The Kids,' at Tribeca in 2021. It was nerve-wracking and it's hard to look back on.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Nope, but my family used to own one.

How is social media changing news?

It's all right at the tip of your fingers, which is great for keeping up with news but also makes it easy to fall victim to clickbait.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Eddie Brock? I can't think of any others...

What does it mean to be a journalist?

It means everything to me to be an entertainment journalist; especially because I get to work alongside people I look up to.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

#ReleaseTheSnyderCut is the only one that comes to mind and I still can't believe it worked.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

WordPress and Microsoft Word are two things I can't live without. Same for Descript for all of my interview transcriptions.

What's your favorite social network?

I would say Twitter just because it's fun to hear people's reactions to my reviews or work.

Who do you wish followed you?

I'd be elated if I ever saw Kaitlyn Dever followed me. Ditto for Paul McCartney.

Why did you become a journalist?

In high school, I watched a lot of Collider: Movie Talk and saw people talking about movies for a living (some of which are co-workers now).

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I attended high school online, so they didn't have anything. I did, however, have a review published my senior year of 'Infinity War.'

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I'd have to go with my Siân Heder interview because I adore 'CODA,' the interview took so long to get organized, and it won Best Picture.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

The best advice I was given was: "Closed mouths don't get fed."

When's the best time to pitch you?

Anytime! I'm always checking emails and love getting pitches. Never hesitate to reach out to me.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

I was pitched Rebecca Hall for 'The Night House,' but I got bumped after scheduling issues. One day!!

What's your favorite drink?

Iced Raspberry Lattes from Dunkin' are my go-to.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Probably playing my guitar, playing rough renditions of my favorite Paul McCartney or U2 tunes.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

David Ehrlich's reviews on IndieWire always brighten my day. He's my inspiration critic-wise, and I always get a laugh out of his work.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That I just "watch movies" all day. There are plenty of days I don't watch anything at all and others where I cram in numerous films.
