What does it mean to be a journalist?
Being a watchdog for the people. Being an ethical gatekeeper of information. Always questioning authority and seeking all aspects of a story
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
My eyes, ears, nose, notepad, recorder and DSLR camera.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
A story on a girl killed after running a stop sign. The city failed to share an important fact: a tree limb on city land blocked the sign.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Stay curious, and always push yourself no matter how boring the story seems. Always ask tough questions of powerful people. Stay persistent.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
That journalists have beats to begin with. The industry is changing. You've got to be prepared to spend your free time learning new skills.
