Divergent microbial functional pathways and declining redundancy in lake sediments across eutrophication gradients
Abstract Microbial communities underpin nutrient cycling across aquatic ecosystems and are strongly influenced by human disturbance, yet the implication for functional redundancy remains poorly understood. Lake eutrophication is a global threat to freshwater systems, primarily driven by human activities within lakes and surrounding catchments. We hypothesize that eutrophication alters functional redundancy of key metabolic pathways in lake sediments.
Inorganic carbon fixation by deep prokaryotes as an unaccounted-for CO 2 sink in Antarctic waters
Abstract The Ross Sea is one of the most productive regions of the Ocean and is a major site of deep-water formation, ultimately affecting the global thermohaline circulation. As such, it plays a pivotal role in regulating atmospheric CO2 through the biological and the solubility carbon pumps. Despite the recognised importance of this area, the knowledge of the carbon fluxes mediated by microbes in its interior remains limited.
Science challenges and solutions to support implementation of the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction Agreement
Abstract The Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement provides a new opportunity to consolidate and achieve global marine environmental goals. Here we focus on how science and technology will support its implementation. We provide an overview of existing scientific knowledge and methods that are scalable to Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (ABNJ). Reviewing data gaps, challenges and opportunities, we outline solutions and a roadmap focused on enhancing resources and capacity.
They survive addiction but a routine prescription could kill them: The case for a national script system
I sit across the room from my new, high-risk patient, Ray.* He’s already had years of practice at not dying. He’s out of custody now, released in the last few days. No longer sharing a single needle with 20 or 30 others. He’s starting on methadone. A few weeks into dosing, Ray’s getting stable. We sit together and yarn about his new life. Now that he is on opioid substitution, he’s back with his family and looking for a job. He tells me he loves to work hard.

How much is the power for your EV fleet going to cost? | Logistics UK
🕒 Article read time: 2 minutes If you are electrifying your fleet, or considering doing so, the chances are that the future cost of the electricity is a daunting and significant source of risk and concern. The millions you spend on diesel today will soon become the millions you spend on electricity, but how you access electricity and the associated commercial structures are complex and opaque by comparison. VEV can help you get started and avoid setting yourself up for big costs and penalties.
"The Role of PAS Kinase and the Gut Microbiome In Metabolism and Diabet" by Andrew Rees and Laura Bridgewater
Keywords PAS kinase, gut microbiome, metabolism, diabetes onset, mice Department Microbiology and Molecular Biology Abstract Diabetes and obesity are among the most prevalent health concerns in the modern world. However, prevention of their onset and control of their symptoms are still largely limited by our understanding of how these diseases arise. Recent research has indicated that the composition of the gut microbiome is one of the important factors in development of these diseases (5).

Latitudinal variation in the potential activity of Atlantic Ocean bacterioplankton revealed through 16S rRNA and 16S rRNA gene metabarcoding
1 Introduction Bacterioplankton regulate biogeochemical and ecological processes in the oceans at local and global scales (Falkowski et al., 2008). For example, approximately 50% of global primary production occurs in the marine environment (Field et al., 1998), a large fraction of which is converted to dissolved organic matter (DOM) that is processed by heterotrophic bacterioplankton through the microbial loop (Azam and Malfatti, 2007).

A Novel Ca2+ Signaling Pathway Coordinates Environmental Phosphorus Sensing and Nitrogen Metabolism in Marine Diatoms
Highlights • Phosphorus (P)-limited diatoms sense P via a Ca2+-dependent signaling pathway • P-Ca2+ signaling is employed by representative centric and pennate diatom species • Rapid cross-talk with N metabolism mediates diatom recovery responses to P resupply • P-Ca2+ signaling coordinates diatom recovery responses from P limitation Summary Diatoms are a diverse and globally important phytoplankton group, responsible for an estimated 20% of carbon fixation on Earth.
