What was your first job as a journalist?

I was the sole reporter and photographer at The Central Telegraph in Biloela, covering everything from federal politics to court to sport.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Tintin sure never seemed to be working to a deadline.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Read, read, read as much as you can - and study how others write. Focus on news value. Edit your old work. Be ready to go where the jobs are.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

The Monthly. Inside Story. SMH, NYT + WaPo. The Economist via audio is great for car trips. Columbia Journalism Review. The Athletic.
