GUEST OPINION: Continue the Homeless Contribution Tax Credit
The Colorado State Legislature is currently deliberating a measure with significant implications for organizations like Catholic Charities that work daily to serve the most vulnerable members of our community. The Homeless Contribution Tax Credit (HCTC), established during the 2022 legislative session, provides a 25% tax credit for individuals who make charitable contributions to eligible organizations engaged in homeless outreach, support, and prevention.

CARITAS CORNER: Justice for Children
Few issues have unified Catholic and Christian faithful like the fight against abortion. The 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling galvanized churches around action and ideology, prompting generations to protest, invest money, and vote in support of unborn children. Where do we go next with that passion and energy now that the Supreme Court has overturned Roe v. Wade? Clearly, there is work to do at the state level. In Colorado, the Reproductive Health Equity Act keeps abortions available and legal.
CARITAS CORNER: Four Stories of Homelessness
Working for Catholic Charities provides me with unique and wonderful opportunities. One of them is this column which grants me a voice throughout the diocese every six weeks. Another is the chance to meet and get to know the people we are serving. Some of the most meaningful interactions I have had in this work are with our homeless brothers and sisters. For a variety of reasons, including the stigma that surrounds our homeless, it is a group whose story I rarely heard before working here.
CARITAS CORNER: The Blurred Line Between Charity and Enablement
By ANDY BARTON 03/04/2022 | Comments One of the greatest challenges in humanitarian work is determining when it becomes enablement. At what point does providing services contribute to the propagation of people’s needs? It is a challenge that arises around issues ranging from homelessness to asylum seekers at the border. The claim of enablement occurs with some frequency for Catholic Charities when focused on the location of the Marian House in Colorado Springs.

CARITAS CORNER: Finding Grace in This Advent Season
By ANDY BARTON 12/17/2021 | Comments One afternoon earlier this month, I received a call from an attorney I know. He explained that a woman had been sleeping in a covered area behind his downtown office for some time and he was looking for guidance on how to help her. He was not asking to get rid of her — he had been allowing her to sleep in that spot for months, occasionally allowing her to sleep in the building.
CARITAS CORNER: Time to Get Back to Work
By ANDY BARTON 10/15/2021 | Comments At this point in the pandemic, nothing should surprise us. Yet the employment numbers that came out earlier this month are head scratching. First, the Labor Department reported that unemployment claims fell to their lowest levels since the pandemic began. The following day, the report of September job gains showed the slowest pace of growth in a year.
CARITAS CORNER: The Importance of Kamloops to Catholics
By ANDY BARTON 08/20/2021 | Comments The history of Indian residential schools was largely unknown to me before June when the news of 215 unmarked graves at a school formally run by the Catholic Church surfaced out of Kamloops, British Columbia. I have followed the story since then as new discoveries have increased the count of these graves in Canada to 1,300.
Are You a Positive Influence?
Are You a Positive Influence? Posted on 01 August 2021 By Andy Barton I recently finished my annual binge of the Band of Brothers miniseries based on the book of the same name by Stephen E. Ambrose. What strikes me each time I watch Band of Brothers is the esprit de corps shared by the men of Easy Company. These men built a special bond fostered out of shared experiences during training at Camp Toccoa, through the Battle of the Bulge, to the end of the war, and through the rest of their lives.
CARITAS CORNER: A Legacy of Leadership
By ANDY BARTON 06/18/2021 | Comments By virtue of my job, I am one of a relatively few number of the 180,000 Catholics in the Diocese of Colorado Springs who gets to interact with our bishop on a regular basis. I take that familiarity for granted, forgetting that most people only see Bishop Sheridan in more formal settings which do not allow for the kind of interactions that build familiarity.
CARITAS CORNER: Teaching Catholic Charity
By ANDY BARTON 04/16/2021 | Comments Getting kids into heaven — that is how Deacon Rob Rysavy, the president of St. Mary’s High School, explained the goal of Catholic education in a conversation recently. His characterization brought to mind an experience I had earlier in April in the gymnasium at Divine Redeemer School. Catholic Charities of Central Colorado had been chosen as the recipient of the Extreme Lenten Project to collect toiletry items for our community’s poor and vulnerable.
CARITAS CORNER: The Immigration Bill and Catholic Teaching
By ANDY BARTON 02/19/2021 | Comments The best advice I have ever received about understanding Catholic teaching on modern times came from a friend who recommended reading encyclicals. Pope Benedict’s “Deus Caritas Est” was the first one I picked up, in a little red, paperback version. I read it in one sitting. That copy, with my underlines and exclamation points on dog eared pages, sits at my desk and I refer to it frequently.

CARITAS CORNER: Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas
By ANDY BARTON 12/18/2020 | Comments I had never seen “Meet Me in St. Louis” until recently, but I knew the song. Judy Garland’s “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” is, according to the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), the fifth most popular Christmas song of all time. It has been covered by countless musicians in the 76 years since it was written by Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane in 1944.
CARITAS CORNER: The Ministry of Charity Demands Advocating for Justice
By ANDY BARTON 06/19/2020 | Comments Two dates in 2020 will be etched in my memory forever: March 13, the day COVID-19 changed everything, and May 25, the day George Floyd’s death changed everything again. In both cases, the staff at Catholic Charities relied on prayer, faith, compassion and innovation to help find a way forward. As a result, we never missed a day of service to our poor and vulnerable during the coronavirus shutdown, finding new and innovative ways to help those in need.

Apartment Sessions Builds Community Among Musicians
Caught by phone one recent Saturday, Evan Tyor is eating a late breakfast and getting re-acclimated to life in the Big Apple. “[I’m] honestly just sort of coming back down to Earth from our trip to Georgia,” says the former Athenian in between bites.
LeeAnn Peppers: For Asha, With Love Review
October 9, 2019 Music Record Reviews LeeAnn Peppers: For Asha, With Love Review By Andy Barton (Independent Release) Athens singer-songwriter LeeAnn Peppers follows up her highly personal 2017 debut, What Isn’t Said, with an even more intimate venture into the depths of loss and grief.
WesdaRuler Has Something Important to Say
For years, Wes Johnson has been a go-to in the Athens hip-hop community for his signature laid-back beats. A pivotal figure in the Space Dungeon collective, his production work as WesdaRuler has served most notably as the foundation for emcee turned county commissioner Linqua Franqa’s raps.
Gringo Star, Nuclear Wintour, Outersea
July 31, 2019 Calendar Picks Gringo Star, Nuclear Wintour, Outersea Saturday, Aug. 3 @ Caledonia Lounge By Andy Barton Gringo Star has been a staple of the Atlanta music scene for 10 years now, electrifying audiences with occasionally psychedelic dives into the garage-rock deep end. The group is marking this anniversary with its first live album, Controlled Burn, which was recorded at The Earl in East Atlanta Village in late 2018.
Two Ships and a Toy Guitar: How an Unexpected Voyage Led to an Album
Patrick Morales woke to the sound of waves crashing against the side of his fishing ship. The barrage of noise was loud and constant, and it sounded like gunshots to a biologist fresh out of college. He nervously crawled up toward the wheel house to ask if everything was OK. “Yeah, that’s normal,” was the response he received before determining that his bunk and a few doses of Dramamine sounded much better than the storm on deck.
Man Man, Rebecca Black
July 17, 2019 Calendar Picks Man Man, Rebecca Black Friday, July 19 @ Georgia Theatre By Andy Barton Man Man emerged in the early 2000s with a brash amalgam of freak folk and weirdo pop, injecting the already outsider-prone genres with a dose of carnivalesque primacy.
Grand Vapids Overcome, Plow Ahead With Eat the Shadow
In January 2015, local alt-rock quartet Grand Vapids released a stunning, slowcore-steeped debut album, Guarantees. Though it likely wasn’t intended as a statement, putting out a record that early in the year—before much of Athens’ college-aged population is back in town and the music industry has time to snap out of its year-end-list holiday coma—implies at least a modicum of confidence that it’s going to stick.
Outer Spaces, Deep State, Radiator Hospital, Dagmar Vork
July 10, 2019 Calendar Picks Outer Spaces, Deep State, Radiator Hospital, Dagmar Vork Friday, July 12 @ Flicker Theatre & Bar By Andy Barton If the name Cara Beth Satalino rings a bell, it’s for good reason. The singer-songwriter used to call Athens home in the early 2010s, when she fronted the beguiling trio Witches. Satalino moved to Baltimore around 2014, but not before getting a new musical endeavor, Outer Spaces, off the ground.
Kishi Bashi: Omoiyari Review
June 5, 2019 Music Record Reviews Kishi Bashi: Omoiyari Review Saturday, June 8 @ Georgia Theatre By Andy Barton (Joyful Noise) On Kaoru Ishibashi’s last studio album, 2017’s Sonderlust, the prodigious violinist and pop songsmith put his own spin on throwback funk and AOR tones to explore romantic highs and lows to great, often glitzy effect.
Athens Resonates Aims to Enrich the Local Music Ecosystem
Locals and outsiders alike are familiar with Athens’ rich musical history. The Classic City has been fortunate to serve as a breeding ground for pop creativity for nearly 40 years, fostering boundary-pushing talent and allowing them a life of growth and prosperity.
Rose Hotel, Sunset Pig, Little Gold, Dagmar Vork
May 29, 2019 Calendar Picks Rose Hotel, Sunset Pig, Little Gold, Dagmar Vork Saturday, June 1 @ Flicker Theatre & Bar By Andy Barton Jordan Reynolds’ musical career began in Bowling Green, KY, where she played keys and shared singing duties in the psych-inflected indie-rock quintet Buffalo Rodeo. She has since made her way to Atlanta and fashioned a new creative identity all her own in Rose Hotel, a dreamy outlet for home recording not too far off from the sounds of Mazzy Star and Jessica Pratt.
With Sailors and Ships, Jeremy Wheatley Steps Out From Behind the Drum Kit
Here’s a little lesson in rock and roll economics: Pretty much everyone wants to play the guitar. Everyone has their own reasons, but whatever the case, this imbalance in instrumentation choice creates a dire demand for reliably solid drummers. As a case in point, see longtime Athenian drummer Jeremy Wheatley.
Roadkill Ghost Choir, T. Hardy Morris, Grand Vapids
May 8, 2019 Calendar Picks Roadkill Ghost Choir, T. Hardy Morris, Grand Vapids Friday, May 10 @ Caledonia Lounge By Andy Barton It’s always a bummer to see a great local band call it quits, especially one that’s repped the Classic City as well as DeLand, FL, transplants Roadkill Ghost Choir have. The brothers-in-arms—and brothers IRL—are retiring the name in pursuit of other creative outlets, and they’ll be riding off into the sunset with a farewell show at the Caledonia.
Girlpool, Hatchie
May 1, 2019 Calendar Picks Girlpool, Hatchie Wednesday, May 1 @ 40 Watt Club By Andy Barton Few bands can stake such a claim over the development of their narrative as Girlpool, the brainchild of songwriters Cleo Tucker and Harmony Tividad. With their debut, Before the World Was Big, the pair carved out an idiosyncratic niche with their twee-like vocals and interwoven guitars.
Faye Webster Finds Her Voice on Nuanced New LP
Atlanta singer-songwriter Faye Webster is nine shows into her first leg of touring behind a new album when I reach her by phone, choking back some Throat Coat herbal tea. “Hi, how are you?” she asks, before catching enough air to laugh. She and labelmate Stella Donnelly just played a show the night before at The Bishop in Bloomington, IN, home to her new imprint, Secretly Canadian, and she’s killing time before hitting the road for Chicago. “What else do you need in life?” she wonders aloud.
Summer Singles Compilation Showcases Women in Athens Music
When summertime in Athens rolls around, there’s much to be thankful for: more bearable traffic, shorter brunch lines and pools aplenty to drop in on. But for small businesses and musicians alike, time can slow to a crawl as the bulk of clientele and audiences head back to the ’burbs. No stranger to this seasonal downturn, recording engineer and studio operator Jesse Mangum—with a little ingenuity—developed a productive way to pass the summer and drum up business for the fall.
Neighbor Lady Makes Magic on Maybe Later
Few small-scale shows possess the same magic as an outdoor AthFest Club Crawl gig; the ripe summer heat and cheap booze provide the perfect conditions for sonic enchantment.
Tune-Yards, My Brightest Diamond
Although Tune-Yards, the eclectic recording project of singer-songwriter Merrill Garbus, has existed since the mid-aughts, it wasn’t until the release of 2011’s Afropop-influenced w h o k i l l that she began turning heads of both listeners and critics alike (singles “Gangsta” or “Bizness” were the likely culprits).
Partials: Glossolalia EP Review
(True-Blue) The debut EP from pop-minded sextet Partials focuses thematically on society’s relationship with machines. The title itself means “speaking in tongues,” and throughout the record, by way of song titles and lyrics alike, language provides a connective tissue between the buzzing and whirring of electronic automatons and the flesh and blood of humankind.
Japanese Breakfast, Snail Mail, Art School Jocks
After a handful of lo-fi cassette releases, Michelle Zauner’s solo recording project, Japanese Breakfast, entered the national spotlight in 2016 with the release of Psychopomp, a collection of dreamy indie-rock tunes centered around the death of her mother and the grief that ensued. The album was re-released by Bloomington, IN label Dead Oceans before Zauner began work on her expansive follow-up, Soft Sounds From Another Planet.
Algiers, Omni, Lee Bains III & the Glory Fires
The predominantly Atlanta-based four-piece Algiers dwells in sonic and thematic landscapes that are especially of the moment, blending elements of discordant post-punk with fiery traces of soul and gospel music. What results is a complex and heady mix of politically conscious resistance music, with lead singer Franklin James Fisher’s impassioned pipes rising up over the din of programmed drums, vocal samples and biting guitar, offering a voice of strength to the oppressed and downtrodden.
Shade Releases a Freewheeling Album in Memory of a Friend
For all intents and purposes, the local genre-benders in Shade have had their sophomore album in the can for three years now. Any other band probably would have grown anxious, apathetic or a mix of the two holding on to their creative treasure for so long, eager to release it into the world for all to hear—and rightfully so. Yet the Athens trio, led by singer and guitarist Phelan LaVelle, seems to have remained pretty chill about it.
Juna, Strange Ranger, Harlot Party, Civils
While former emo mainstay Juna hasn’t exactly been hibernating since its last full-length, 2014’s On Courage—the band’s members have been active in a handful of other projects between Athens and Atlanta, including WF Addams, Malevich and Saline—Sunday marks the group’s first show together in roughly two years. The quintet has since cut On Courage to vinyl and will be playing a small run of shows throughout the Southeast to let folks know it’s back in action and working on new material.
Triathalon, Innerwave, New Madrid
For years, Triathalon has built its sound off of surf-inflected dream pop, the band’s former home base of Savannah washing its jams in waves of reverb. Recently, the core trio of Adam Intrator, Chad Scott Chilton and Hunter Jayne relocated, and their sound has acclimated to the hustle and bustle of their new stomping grounds, New York City.
Through Music and Politics, Linqua Franqa Calls on Athens to Act
It was hard to miss Linqua Franqa in 2017. The linguistics doctoral student turned Athens It Girl—known to friends and family as Mariah Parker—released her self-titled debut last February and quickly took the Classic City by storm, bridging cultural divides and injecting a hefty dose of sociopolitical awareness into local music in the process.
The Whigs' Parker Gispert Reflects on 10 Years of Mission Control
No Athens band captured the back-to-basics rock swagger of the early-to-mid 2000s better than The Whigs, a scrappy trio of college-aged buds brought together by mutual friends and shared music tastes. Capitalizing on the post-Strokes boom, the band created a significant groundswell in town by bringing together both sides of the Khaki Divide.
Cindy Wilson: Change Review
(Kill Rock Stars) After some time out of the spotlight, longtime B-52s songwriter and vocalist Cindy Wilson emerged late last year with Sunrise, an exquisitely produced five-song EP of covers and originals showcasing a broad palette of pop and electronic sounds, plus a cadre of primo Athens musicians capable of taking Wilson’s latest tunes to intoxicating new heights.
Love Tractor Finds That Elusive Athens Feeling, Again
While Athens has many easily identifiable qualities that attract and retain individuals from all walks of life—a great university, low cost of living, a vibrant arts scene—there’s something about the Classic City that remains inexplicably appealing and difficult to pin down.
Helms Alee, Motherfucker, Marses
It’s apparent on Seattle trio Helms Alee’s most recent record, 2016’s Stillicide, that the band was intent on continuing to tamper with the trappings of both hard rock and being a three-piece. While its thick sound is still intact, at times coated in sludge and at others dissonantly shoegazing, new approaches to song structure and rhythm have surfaced from the deep.
Roadkill Ghost Choir: False Youth Etcetera Review
(Freakout) DeLand, FL transplants Roadkill Ghost Choir have always aspired to make sounds bigger than themselves. Their first EP, Beggars Guild, released before they made the move to Athens, was an early indication of the soaring, roots-rock tunes the band was capable of producing.
