Flagpole Magazine, often abbreviated to simply Flagpole, is an American alternative newsweekly that focuses on the cultural scene of Athens, Georgia and its surrounding communities. It was founded by Jared Bailey and Dennis Greenia in 1984 and is currently edited and published by Pete McCommons. The publication covers local music, politics, news, features and news related to the town that is also the home of the University of Georgia. Although nationwide delivery to paid subscribers is available, it is distributed free of charge to over 275 locations throughout the Athens area, earning the bulk of its revenue through the sale of advertising space. The Dream Syndicate Finds Its Way Through The Medicine Show
In January of 1984, the Dream Syndicate released its second album, Medicine Show. It was divisive upon arrival. The jangling and cerebral art rock inflections of 1982’s The Days of Wine and Roses had given way to a broader rock-and-roll sound. Songs like “Burn,” “John Coltrane Stereo Blues” and the album’s title track were bursting with images of dusty roads, long shadows, bad decisions and the strange, unsettled mythology of America.
