Flagpole Magazine, often abbreviated to simply Flagpole, is an American alternative newsweekly that focuses on the cultural scene of Athens, Georgia and its surrounding communities. It was founded by Jared Bailey and Dennis Greenia in 1984 and is currently edited and published by Pete McCommons. The publication covers local music, politics, news, features and news related to the town that is also the home of the University of Georgia. Although nationwide delivery to paid subscribers is available, it is distributed free of charge to over 275 locations throughout the Athens area, earning the bulk of its revenue through the sale of advertising space. A 9-year-old child has died of injuries sustained when the driver of a pickup truck hit him on Lexington Road. The 2018 Dodge Ram was traveling westbound at about 9 p.m. Aug. 8 and “made contact with the pedestrian” who entered the roadway from the Hardee’s parking lot, according to Athens-Clarke County police. Maxton Ball of Ellenwood, on the south side of metro Atlanta, died on Aug. 11, police said. Police did not name the driver or say if charges have been filed.

‘Urban Camping’ Ban Aimed at Downtown Homeless Voted Down
Urban camping will remain legal in Athens after dozens of residents packed City Hall to defeat a measure that would have prohibited sleeping, cooking or using a tent in public spaces for purposes of living accommodations. Homeless service providers, advocates and people with current or past experience being unhoused spoke in opposition to the measure for nearly two and a half hours.
