Biochar from human waste could solve global fertiliser shortages, study finds
About a quarter of global greenhouse gas emissions come from agriculture, the IPCC says. Photograph: Alex McGregor/Alamy Charcoal made from human waste could help solve fertiliser shortages as well as reduce pollution and energy use, a study has found. Biochar is a form of charcoal made from organic matter treated at high heat, which is often used on farming soil as a fertiliser. The process also removes carbon from the atmosphere, making it a useful carbon sink.
Maglev train researchers may have solved ‘tunnel boom’ shock waves
The latest protoype of China’s maglev train is capable of travelling at 600km/h (about 370mph), a speed that would induce a boom in a tunnel just 1.2 miles long. Photograph: CRRC Researchers hope they may have solved the “tunnel boom” problem as they prepare to roll out China’s latest prototype magnetic levitation train. The newest version of the maglev train is capable of travelling at 600km/h (about 370mph).
Scientists identify bacterium behind devastating wasting disease in starfish
A decade after the onset of a sea star wasting disease (SSWD) epidemic considered the largest ever documented in the wild, researchers have identified the microbial culprit responsible: a strain of the bacterium Vibrio pectenicida. In 10 years, the bacterium has ravaged sunflower sea stars (Pycnopodia helianthoides), a large sea star or starfish, along the western coast of North America, with a loss of 5.8 billion since 2013 – or 90% of the total global population.
A Preliminary Assessment of Land Restoration Progress in the Great Green Wall Initiative Region Using Satellite Remote Sensing Measurements
1. Introduction Land restoration in arid and semi-arid regions, such as the Sahel-Sahara, is essential for enhancing climate resilience, combating desertification, and supporting sustainable development. The Great Green Wall (GGW) initiative [1,2], launched in 2007 by the African Union, represents one of the world’s most ambitious environmental restoration projects.
China’s Zero-Covid U-Turn: Concessions Fall Short of Systemic Change
China’s Zero-Covid Policy: Beyond Pandemic Management On 7th December, almost a fortnight after the tragedy of the Urumqi apartment block fire and the ensuing nationwide protests, the Chinese Communist Party, led by president Xi Jinping, finally began rolling back the country’s draconian Zero-Covid policies.
Jesus is Risen: Cuppers final glory for JCFC
Jesus’ strike-force broke Balliol hearts last night, putting six past the Broad Street college’s defence to secure the Cuppers title 6-2. Coming into the game clear underdogs, Balliol had hoped they could nick a result by taking advantage of their star players Caleb Mbanaso and Josh Goldstein, but Jesus’ polished attack of Sam Lewis and Alfie Cicale proved too much. Cherwell sent two reporters to Iffley Road, one from each college.
