Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs
https://newsroom.intel.com/corporate/ceo-letter-2025-26-intel-corporate-responsibility-report As always, Intel CEO (or Mr. Ronery) is just full of word-salads, nothing in this letter mentions anything actionable nor shows any results of actions taken in the last 1+ year of his leadership. Just a lot of marketing talk and tries to show a tough stance on whatever "Corporate responsibility" is at Intel. This guy is a clown along with the clowns he has hired from other companies (qualcomm and co).
Don’t Get Too Comfortable - Flashback
Friday, January 14th, 2022 Don’t Get Too Comfortable – Flashback “A higher rate of urgency does not imply ever-present panic, anxiety, or fear. It means a state in which complacency is virtually absent.” – John P. Kotter Today’s Friday Flashback is a message from December 2016 that still applies today. Don’t get too comfortable and become a mediocre firm. – Life is Good. Yes! But Don’t Get Too Comfortable. "Success breeds complacency. Complacency breeds failure. Only the paranoid survive." Hi Justin, Some code was forked from Apache Arrow, particularly utility methods that are not public, as well as some of the benchmarking code. Thanks, Andy. Looking for guidance on IP clearance process for donation to Apache Arrow
Thank you Craig for the detailed advice. I have updated the IP clearance form and will start the vote email thread shortly. [IP CLEARANCE] Apache Arrow
Hi Incubator PMC, The Apache Arrow PMC has voted to accept the donation of "Ballista", which is a distributed query scheduler [1]. Please vote to accept this contribution. This is a lazy consensus majority vote, per the IP clearance process [2], open for at least 72 hours. Thanks, Andy Grove Apache Arrow PMC [1] https://incubator.apache.org/ip-clearance/arrow-rust-ballista.html [2] http://incubator.apache.org/ip-clearance/
Looking for guidance on IP clearance process for donation to Apache Arrow
Thanks for that advice, Craig. I have gone ahead and created https://incubator.apache.org/ip-clearance/arrow-rust-ballista.html in preparation for the vote and I have a couple more questions now: 1. The trademark search did find other software products using the name Ballista as a registered trademark. What are the implications of this? Will I need to remove use of that name from the PR before proceeding to a vote? 2.
Looking for guidance on IP clearance process for donation to Apache Arrow
Thanks, Dave. To give an update on the situation, out of the 12 committers with > 1 commit, we have ICLAs submitted or already on file for 7 of those, including all the contributors that I would consider key to the project. I have been unable to get any response from the other 5 so far. Based on this, should I consider moving to a vote now or wait and see if I can get more signed ICLAs? Thanks, Andy.
Looking for guidance on IP clearance process for donation to Apache Arrow
Hi, The Apache Arrow PMC has passed a vote to accept the donation of the Ballista project [1]. The donation contains code from ~30 contributors and it may not be possible to obtain ICLAs from all of them. If this does turn out to be the situation, what steps can we take instead? Thanks, Andy. 6 must-read books for startup leaders navigating the pandemic
By Vinnie Lauria6 minute Read One of the best things that leaders of a young company can do, with the pandemic and shutdowns continuing to disrupt everything, is . . . read books. Why? Because when crucial interactions are distorted by being forced online, you need more than tips for looking good in a videoconference. When uncertain times threaten a firm’s survival, you need more than emergency moves. It’s time to focus on fundamentals.
Andy Grove and the mysteries of the inflection point
It begins like a classic HBS case study. Andy Grove and Gordon Moore are sitting in Grove’s office at Intel. They are deeply unhappy. Intel is caught in a price war with the Japanese.

Management books developers should read, too
I’ve grown a lot over the last year at my job. Things are never really the same for long, and I’ve had a ton of different challenges to tackle – both on the technical side, but in a growing proportion on the side of people management and technical leadership, too. So I wanted to share some of the books I’ve loved over the last year, which I would recommend even to developers who aren’t currently managing people or projects.

Andy Grove: How to Be a Mentor
Corporate mentoring programs are a charade. The intent behind them is good, but like everything the professionals get a hold of, they turn it into an incredibly complex and counterproductive routine. I suspect the reason these programs exist is so HR can beat you up and have something they can brag about. The moment someone says “mentor” or “mentee,” I get waves of nausea. My problem is this: As a manager you are supposed to be a resource.

In the early 1950s, it was nearly impossible to know the value of an automobile. TOP 12 QUOTES BY GORDON MOORE
If everything you try works, you aren't trying hard enough. Most of what I learned as an entrepreneur was by trial and error. One thing a leader does is to remove the stigma of mistakes. Moore's Law - The number of transistors and resistors on a chip doubles every 24 months With engineering, I view this year's failure as next year's opportunity to try it again. Failures are not something to be avoided. You want to have them happen as quickly as you can so you can make progress rapidly.
