Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes, I learned to type in 7th grade, probably the most valuable skill I developed in middle school.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

I cited the hashtag "Nyquil chicken" in an article about how social media can distract public attention from important social issues.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

RSF's Press Freedom Index is invaluable, ProPublica's databases of political contributions, but most of all the SPJ's Code of Ethics.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

No, I had little interest in journalism back then. My interest in the power of news developed when I was a grad student in sociology at UCLA.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Hopefully moving under my own power on a trail, the wilder the better.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

Physical threats to journalists and censorship of news are problems in other nations, but not in the United States.
